Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I’ve had several interested parties message me through eBay as if they want a friend to talk to. For instance, someone who will first correct my terminology (I typically just say button cord, but this person really wanted me to say wind trolley— whatever), then give me a history of the term (what a wind trolley is and how one would use it), and then present to me a hypothetical situation where if they purchase the hat, then they’d have to hide the purchase from “the wife.”

I previously wrote sellers every now and again with info on their hat and try to be friendly, but in general it felt too much like a busy body and I’ve quit doing it. Sometimes it was cool, but at the end of the day while eBay is both a friendly swap shop and a business transaction for most folks it is more a business.

Sometimes when I see a hat offer on eBay with obvious mistakes or falsehoods, I'll send the seller a message with the correct terminology or facts.
Some react nicely, change their offer details and even thank me for the input.
Others don't care and probably just think I'm a "wise ass"

Did you win it? I thought about bidding. The sweatband is toast and will have to be replaced so I thought since its lost/losing its originality it wouldn’t be a sin to size it up. The photos were just too low quality for me to get a feel for the hat. I hope to see it returned to all its glory.

I did win it. Had a few hundred to play with after selling another hat so thought why not. I'm already looking at where I can order a sweatband ( asked Gannon ) but if anyone knows a good source let me know.

I'm thinking it wouldn't be too strange to maybe replace the sweatband and have the original markings that are still intact sewn or patched on to the new leather. Try and maintain as much originality as possible. Excited to have a seemingly very old hat that I can actually wear.

Try and maintain as much originality as possible. Excited to have a seemingly very old hat that I can actually wear.

Take the old out and put in a new. Save it if you like but that thing is toast. No patchwork, please. This fellow is a member here, @bond and sells some nice pre-sewn sweats or send it to him for repair. Nutria is a nice snag. Very similar to the color of mine.

Thanks Jack, I already sent him a message to see if he can give me an idea of what I would be looking at. Of course I can tack an extra $100 on that as a punishment for being Canadian.

Like a lot of things vintage or antique, with ownership comes the responsibility of good stewardship.

I’ve been sending most of my refurbishment work to VS. Art and his crew do a good job at great prices. I don’t think your idea of having the original sweatband debossings transferred to the new band will work out very well. You can hold onto the original sweat and keep them all together in case it ever gets passed along.

I don't know, a sea run rainbow trout, coming back like a salmon to his home river, can put up a fair fight. You know when a 20 pound steelie hits your lure you're in for a scrapple with acrobatics included.

I wanted to buy an Oxblood Dillinger last year, when I was buying my new Optimos, but the brims were narrow. I thought I would ask Tiffani for a wider brim, but then I got into vintage and forgot about it.

Then I saw Scott's a couple of weeks ago, and tried to keep it out of my mind but failed. Also, he was asking 695 for it, and that helped. Then he started coming down in hundred dollar increments, and I decided to make an offer, which he accepted after some negotiation.
I have had wisdoom teeth that were easier to extract than negotiating with Scott is, though. He's tough. [emoji846]
