WOW a size 8 is almost unheard of. Talk about albino whales. I'm guessing they are basing the price on the size because if that were a more standard size it, wouldn't fetch close to that.

I guess we have very different ideas on price, because I'd say that hat in that size isn't in that bad of shape. If I wore that sort of bucket, I'd buy that hat for that price and put a new ribbon on it. And even with that added cost would find the price not so bad.

Yeah
That looked highly questionable to me
I have bought several hats from this seller, and communicate with him from time to time. It's my impression that he is very knowledgeable when talking about hats - and a very nice person to deal with. One of my favorite sellers on eBay. I would be more than surprised if there's anything phony about the hat :)

Could it have been a special order cuz of the size...?
That sounds quite reasonable to me. That could well be the reason for the odd size tag. At first it looks old, as Alan stated, but I rather believe it was "custom made" for a size, Stetson didn't unusually make(?)

Certainly possible... or adjusted by a retailer. I wasn't questioning the scruples of the eBay seller. And it might be explained somewhere in his lengthy description. I couldn't get to the bottom of it.

I didn't see anyone suggest anything about the seller

but that size tag looks strange and doesn't look like it has lived the same life that hat has clearly lived

that's all I'm saying

it would be a red flag if I was a potential buyer without a doubt

The hat has seen some action over its life... lost a liner, a run in with some shoe polish... possibly some work from the New York Hat Stores which was a small chain in Los Angeles. There are photos here from Lefty and his Stetson Playboy Air-Lite.

Moon, I didn't see anyone suggest anything about other posters - but I may not have expressed myself sufficiently precise :)

None of us have the exact explanation for the puzzles around this hat, and I was just trying to rule out any possible speculations about the seller, that could occur :)

Thank you gentlemen for your comments and insight. I never would have noticed the tag issue, but your explanations make sense. This may be a once in a lifetime shot at a vintage for me, so I may pull the trigger and make an offer.

Knowing how Stetson is and can be, there is nothing surprising about any anamolies that can occur coming from their factory, past present and future.
