OCMH: Fantastic longhair Stetson Standard! ;)

To me that was anything but expensive. Unfortunately the seller didn't ship to DK :(

I too think the edge was felted. Does the imprint in the last picture say: "Mode Edge"(?) Hard to tell.

Heh. I guess that depends on risk vs. reward.

I just bought a new wallet. So now I have nothing to put in it!

It's a great hat with some fine details from the years preceding the second World War - fixed trolley button sewn to the hat, perforated and laced sweatband. I believe it is a mode-edge. A close cousin to my Imperial Stetson. In this size, rare as hen's teeth.

Alan, thank you for the link. That's a wonderful Imperial! Given the placement and lettering of "Mode Edge," that is probably what the last picture is showing (blurred).

Then that thread linked to another thread, so now I have that to read!

Alan, so you say that 1930s hat is a "mode edge"? When did Stetson start selling the mode edge? I have only seen it marked on 1950s era hats. But I don't know anything about the advertising. Did they advertise mode edge before the 50s?

The Imperial I referenced above was sold c.1940 and is marked mode edge. We will have to wait for a report on the recently sold Royal when the purchaser receives it. I do not have information on Stetson's advertisements for this feature - the Nothing But Stetson Ads thread might be worth a read. Here is a post I made comparing a number of different felted edge hats from different manufacturers in the Side By Side Hat Comparisons thread.

The earliest advertisement and reference for the Mode Edge that I've found is from February 27, 1940. The Re-Enforced Edge that carouselvic mentioned is not a Cavanagh Edge, as it's a different method done when the felt is blown into the cone. I've never ascertained whether the Mode Edge/Selv-edge is a Cavanagh Edge or a Re-Enforced Edge, but I suspect it is a Cavanagh, because the need for dedicated cones is seems like a bad decision over the long term.

Alan, I've never found a trademark registration for Mode Edge. The earlier Selv-Edge I'm confident is a Cavanagh felted edge, as it's used concurrently in marketing with the Re-Enforced Edge. After 1938 the Selv-Edge disappears from Stetson marketing, and in 1940 the Mode Edge appears. The Re-Enforced Edge disappears from marketing after 1936, so that's why I'm not certain as to exactly what the Mode Edge is; it could be either method. As mentioned before, Stetson revived the name Selv-Edge in 1956 for a standard overwelt on their lower-tier hats.
