So I was talking to a friend the other day (I'll let him mention his name if he likes) and he told me how he possily thwarted a cat eating.

Here's my question. I'm not against eating Horses... wouldn't eat a cat or a dog, though I'm not against banning people from doing such things.

Some countries allow dogs to be eaten

A few years back Californians voted away my ability to eat horse... Haven't tried horse though I voted to keep my right.

What's your take? are there animals (off the endangered species list) we shouldn't be allowed to eat or as the head of the food pyramid should we be welcome to treat our pallette to whatever we please?

It's a slippery slope; while I don't want to stand in the way of someone else's rights, the animal lover in me cringes. But what makes typical "pet" animals more special than cows or pigs? If I'm an animal lover, shouldn't I be against all meat products?

This is a good question. *ponders*

Oh, I haven't ever thought about eating pets. I would never eat a cat as I have two. I would never eat a dog. But I think I would try snake, my father told me once snake is delicious. I would never ever eat insects. I know in Munich there is an insect restaurant, they offer a lot of different insect, brrrrrr disgusting.

Some sort of beatle thingy when I was younger, and grasshoppers...
all dead

So when you go through survival courses you learn to eat what's around.

I have quite a gag reflex so only if I am in dier need of food and am in a place with no vegitation will I head for the bugs... otherwise plants.

I'll try anything, short of human. Unless I didn't like him. Or I wanted to absorb all his wisdom.

The weirdest I've eaten is probably reindeer, up in north Russia. Or bear sausages in Estonia. (Sausages were mixed with reindeer and wild boar, so I couldn't really tell.)

But not eating some animals due to cuteness or domesticity has always smacked a little bit of that H word. I don't care, but I'd love to try horse.

The mongols use to tear of strips of skin from their horse and keep it under the saddle as they rode long distances. Horse jerky, you see.

Something just jumped into my mind. I eat meat and I think I would even try horse meat. But I couldn't kill an animal. I work in a pharmaceutical company and I have a colleague who kills guinea pigs for some animal experiments. I could't do that work, I would always pity the animals. But I think there are peoples who eat guinea pigs. And I have heard that some Asians eat dogs and monkeys.

Well, I've ate cat (which is actually good) even tho I own a couple. I get hungry enough, my friend would be my dinner. I might eat the other one first, since I like my cat, but survival's survival. Dog isn't that great...I've ate all kinds of things. Do I think it should be banned? I don't really care. I've ate most of the odder things not knowing what they were.

I DO think that those that eat them shouldn't come and gather strays and lure pets to be butchered. Rasie it like a farm, like we do with cattle and pig. Certain things I don't eat, like veal and monkey brains, but I don't think they should be against the law, just changed to protect the animal friends we DO have, and us by forcing it to be regulated.

Had insects before.

Already done the insect thing. In Montana,we had grasshoppers and ants once in awhile.
I don't have a problem with what people eat as long as it is socially acceptable in the country they reside/visit.One doesn't go to India and butcher cows.People shouldn't come to America and start hunting neighborhood cats and dogs for supper.Decor and respect needs to be shown the various cultures.
I'm against whale hunting but do understand if people need to eat, then what you can find is ok.Sport hunting i'm against.

I have seen dogs and cats for sale in China. It is disturbing to those who consider them domestic pets. But animals are food. And that will never change.
People need to educate themselves as to what is a socially acceptable habit in their area.

Spend enough time on Indian Reservations and you'll have eaten darn near everything. I learned at a very early age that sometimes it's better not to know...and sometimes even better to eat as little as politely possibly and go seek out the fry bread booth at the powwow....
I've had deer, bear, alligator, possum (rather greasy), racoon (not so good), buffalo, rabbit, and several other types of animals. I've heard dog smells really horrible and is very greasy. I have a few very old family recipes from the cherokee and choctaw side and there are some wierd things like yellowjacket stew (the first instruction of which is secure an entire nest of ground dwelling yellowjackets!) and recipes involving the blood of animals (I cannot stomach those)
But here in Tennessee we actually have a roadkill law. If you hit it, you can pick it up and take it home :)

Food Chain

In Hong Kong, a vendor will serve monkey brain, fried over a stove
plate; boiled dog, grilled cat, rat. Indigenous cuisine and custom can
take many forms, which, initially at least, can seem repugnant, but
more often are practical rather than cruel.

There's a difference between eating livestock and eating pets. That's why you shouldn't get emotionally involved with livestock (e.g., naming rabits you are raising for food). Unless you name them Stu.
