This awesome ad is from an 1882 edition of the "Sacramento Daily Record-Union., March 15, 1882"

Not only does the ad show John B. Stetson's Signature, but a trademark stamp for "Clear Back Nutria" that I have never seen before.

It is broken into 3 images because the ad took up almost the entire length of the newspaper.

If anyone ever finds one of those Stetson Yaras, let me know. I MUST have it. Not even for the shape of the hat.

On another note, I remember as a child reading about Hector P. Valenti, star of stage and screen, but never really understanding his hat:

But looking at the "Romance" above, I can see how Valenti's hat might be a stylized version of it:

Looking at these ads from long ago I feel hats are one of those few mass produced items that are capable of reflecting the owner's personality.
I would say only motorcycles rank higher.
Dogs too, though they are sourced differently.
