Early Stetson Fedoras

Just got this beauty today. Thought I'd start a new thread. Hopefully there are more of these out there. I know Garrett has one and Marc (?).

This one is a great tan color (reminds me of a deer/fawn). Has the Paris 1900 Exposition liner tip. The liner is held in by multiple squares of paper tape. The sweatband also has the Exposition stamp lightly embossed. Retailer stamp is "Simon's Hatters Furnishers To Men Who Know 78 Grant St. Buffalo". There is a paper tag under the sweat with the number D268272 which is also stamped on the reverse of the sweat. Another paper tag is under the sweat but is unreadable. The reeded sweatband is taped and dark brown and is 1 7/8" with a very fine ||||| stitch. The 2" ribbon is a couple of shades darker than the felt and has a frayed rear bow edge. The felt is "long hair" and wonderfully moldable. The first picture most accurately shows the color. Brim is 2 3/8" and the crown is 6".

I like the hat, but the pinch runs too low - it causes the ribbon to separate from the hat. Try this 1928 look out.

I've been trying to find out anything about the 1900 logo, specifically its time of use, and haven't come up with much. Stetsonian's 1902 derby box had the logo, as does this 1911 ad. I'd love to see more items that we can positively date with the logo.

Lefty, thats the bash it had in it. I'll have to mess around with it. Hey, I forgot, you have one of these too. You'll have to add it here. It would be very nice to be able to date the usage of this logo.

Buler - each week you seem to acquire a group of hats that surpasses everything I've ever owned.

I'm trying to decide if what I'm feeling is jealousy or envy.

Can I commission you to search for hats for me?

ScottF, thanks or I'm sorry.... not sure which it is. Wait until Jimmy finds out this hat was less than 2 hours from his door.

There's info and a couple of photos here. I still don't know what to call mine. It's soft and it's not a homburg, but it seems strange to call it a fedora.

Tho not a fedora, this is a very early Derby. I've never seen a re-order tag like this one on any other Stetson that I've handled.

Note its missing the Block number. It just has "Finisher," "Depth," and serial number.

Sounds like people who really don't want you to stand out. It is bad enough you are wearing a hat and looking better than them and now you want to go and get a Derby. Really you have no shame don't you know that they want you to look sloppy and have miss matching color clothes so they will not have to worry how bad THEY look.:)
