What style jeans did early 1900-1930s cowboys wear?

Who makes the best reproductions? Any repros that are not Levis?

I'm looking to put together a very accurate outfit, are there any good photos of early cowboys?

Thanks ladies and gents

There are quite a few sites on cowboy clothes most suggesting that cowboys wore tight waisted loose bottomed woollen trousers - often ex military. Of course Levis came onto the market around then too. Here's the best article I found on authentic cowboy clothes at that time.

@Xopher, robinray is right. The early Cowboys wore mostly woolen trousers, hand me downs and second hand clothing. Levis didn't come around until the 1870's and their early ones were dyed brown. Unfortunately, many of the early pics of Cowboys showed them wearing chaps, so it was difficult to tell what their trousers were.

They're are a lot of sites you can google for cowboy images and one of the best is the Miller 101 Ranch in San Angelo, TX. They also had a Wild West show and a lot of those images will pop up. If you can come across a copy of Russell Freedman's "Cowboys of the Wild West", they're a lot of images there.

Also, look at Larry McMurtry's books of the west that have been made into movies. From what I've seen the clothing has appeared to be period correct. The first that comes to mind is "All the Pretty Horses". It is set in 1949, maybe a little later than what you're looking for but the clothing looks correct. In it, Matt Damon's character wears buckle back jeans.

There are also RRL and Stevenson Overalls but those are usually in modern straight cut hence not very accurate repros.
