Similar in tone to discussing how many hats you own or what is in your home library, let us discuss our film libraries.
How many dvd, video, reel to reel films do you have in your film library?

Because we are doing some home renovating, I happen to note a rough count of the number of our dvds. We have approx. 400.

Keep in mind this thread is absolutely about quality over quantity as we discuss numbers. My favorites are the noir, gangster, and Hitchcock films.

Whaddya got?

I probably have around 125. It can get expensive. I have quite a few Criterion titles and they aren't cheap (Stray Dog cost nearly forty bucks!). I have the entire works of Kubrick. Now I'm working on Woody Allen.

Too many, My Friend, and many and much of them are going. There is no way that I am going to move some of the lame titles I've collected over the years, such as Pearl Harbor and King Kong (2006). I'm not sure if I am going to have a sidewalk sale or just abandon them in the hall. [huh] lol

I prefer to buy classic titles that I watch repeatedly or modern films with classic themes. Some favorites are The Third Man, The Complete Thin Man Box Set, The Maltese Falcon, Chinatown, Casablanca, The Prisoner, I could go on...

Of course, my classic film library is about to merge with Amanda's, so who knows how many titles we will end up with. ;) Oh, the benefits of marriage. :)

Our two most recent additions were Wife vs Secretary, which was quite good and The Kennel Murder Case, which is a terrible print of an excellent film. You gotta love Philo Vance. :)

Collecting dvds can get expensive and a bit frustrating. There are times when you buy a film only to have a special edition followed by a director's cut followed by the three disc special! :eusa_doh:

Donate them to the local library!

That's a bit altruistic for me. ;) But wait, is that a write off. lol

Actually, that's a very good idea.
What I do is give them to libraries and friends and hope the Karma comes back in the last few seconds of that Ebay auction I must win! lol ;)

Speaking of lame titles, I sometimes buy the two pack dvd titles at a discounted price. Someone had the idea to package Dillinger with Bad Girls.

If anyone wants a free copy of Bad Girls pm me..

I think I have somewhere in the range of 75-100. Mostly classic films, historically set films, some TV shows, and a few action/thrillers.

I'm going to guess I have a thousand videos. Hitchcocks and films noir top the pile. My excuses are I don't have cable, HHATE going to the movie theatre and I get many movies free from working at the library and repairing video tapes as a volunteer. It's my reward to get first pick of the discards.

I have over 300. I get my cheap flicks from Blockfluster/Netflix and buy my DVD collections (cartoons, TV shows, etc) new. I have a few that have actually gone up in value, who knew!

My weakness is boxsets. I go nuts over them, and just go for the stockpile method, haha.lol All said and done, I would say I have at least 200 movies, probably a few more.:p

DVD's - exactly 169 after Saturday's purchase of Nothing Sacred. I've got a program that catalogs them and lets you search by star, genre, etc. Just punch in the UPC code, when & where you bought it & price, and it pulls in all of the other data from the Internet. And I've been a complete chicken in that I have NEVER run the inventory listing with price (great for insurance if there's ever a calamity) to find out how much we've got tied up in the DVD library.

As for VHS...when we rearranged the house two and a half years ago, we put them all in a few (OK, several...) covered plastic tubs in the garage. Easily more than the DVD's, and a lot are things taped off TV or cable.

One of the projects on my to do list that I'll probably NEVER get to is burning DVD's from the tapes.

Around 30. Used to have almost 50. Then I got fed up and sold them all, started over. But I guess I can't stop myself from buying some every once in awhile.

Even in the VHS days I was never a collector of movies. They are simply repeated on HBO and all the other stations too often for it to be worth me laying out bucks for them. I own 5 W.C. Fields DVDs, a gift, The Wild Bunch and The Warriors. That's it. I have many many hours of air combat and war-related tapes from History Channel but truthfully have rarely watched them again save for information for an article I may be writing.

As for movies I'm very happy with Netflix where I can watch whatever I want as often as I want with no investment.:)

I have 211 DVDs (counting each TV-series box as one DVD, otherwise the number is closer to 300) at the moment, though I was up a bit more until I sold off about 40 a short while ago. I got into some sort of DVD-buying binge where I bought anything just because it was cheap...which I now question why the hell I did. These days I only buy movies that I really want and then try to aim for the more hard to come by, more expensive releases with plenty of extra material if such a release is avaliable.

Yeah, having to move a couple boxes of old tapes in the garage to get to something else, if I had catalog software for all the VHS like I do for the DVD's, and I got everything entered - those bought, those taped from TV or copied from other tapes - I think the total would be right at a squintillion...
