Dumb question, does brown go with black?

I also try to match shoes-belts-jackets. Sometimes I put on a black jacket with brown shoes, but never the other way around. I also own 2 pair of boots in horween no8 colour (steer and shell cordovan). I usually wear them with brown leather jackets (as I try to convince myself I do not need an aero in cordovan).
The only case where I deliberately choose not to combine is with my MA1, obviously only Robin Hood wore green shoes.

Generally i agree with Superfluous but i’ve been easing up a bit. I’ve got a gorgeous black belt (shameless plug Currier and Beamhouse) and I just want to wear it regardless of shoe or jacket color.

I'll mi oblood with either black or brown, but no black and brown together. Don't like how it looks. (I was well into my twenties before I'd wear brown at all, actually.)

I have dress shoes and belts in both brown and black. When I'm being casual, I wear black cowboy boots that are a bit beat up.

I just got a black 100% beaver cowboy hat. I only wear cowboy hats when it is raining or snowing. I guess my main question is, would a dark brown jacket look odd with a black cowboy hat in the rain?

Here is the color I'm thinking of for the jacket.

The shoes and belt matching is what I care about. I’d wear a black or brown leather jacket based on which one I feel like wearing. I try not to wear a black jacket with black trousers though.

It'd look fine to me.

I think boots/shoes and belt should match in general. Leather jacket to me has always been in a separate category -- it's not really part of the "outfit" but is outerwear, and does not have to match anything (more or less..).
Having said that, I actually do think that black brown go well together -- witness all the black CXL boots that show a brown edge around the leather pieces, which look great.

There are different schools of thought, but I generally wear jackets that match my shoes (along with my belt and watch strap). I never wear brown jackets with black shoes. Likewise, I never wear black jackets with brown shoes. To my untrained eye, mixing brown and black leather looks discordant.
Agreed, that's probably why I have never seen a black tuxedo with brown shoes, or a black funeral suit with brown shoes.
I divide colors into two different groups . . . earth tones and black/gray tones. I generally do not mix these two groups. Certain colors -- e.g., blue and maroon -- can work with either group depending on the shade. This is my idiosyncratic methodology for matching clothing. It often results in a rather monochromatic appearance, but I like that.
Not necessarily so. I agree with like for like tones but you can get a good appearance without a monochromatic look.
Plenty of folks here freely mix brown and black on a daily basis. True fashionistas also freely mix brown and black, and eschew my artificial barriers.
Like I said upfront, different schools of thought.
Great post, and a very good point to qualify on. If you like your brown and black mixed, go for it. Your money, your choice, your business.

Black jacket with brown boots looks pretty good to me...

It'sall subjective personal choice, after all, but tbh - much to my other half's frustration - I'll turn the house upside down looking for the right jacket or shoes rather than go out like this. I wore a brown belt with black shoes one day, by accident - nobosy else noticed but it genuinely bugged me all day.

Same here it just doesn't work.

it's a whole different story if the leathers are mixed in the same garment (For example, Two tone jackets or teacore) but wearing brown leather and black leather missmatched to me doesn't look good unless we are talking about a very dark brown and black that somehow match.

It's like people wearing brown belts with black shoes, it just doesn't work.
