I took a break from trying to make Joel Cairo's Greek passport to make a "Murder, My Sweet" prop.
I made a reproduction of Lindsay Marriott's license from the movie. While I was at it I made a Philip Marlowe operator's license as well. As tends to be the case with official documents seen in old Hollywood movies, the license shown in the film is a little different from an actual license of the time (like Cairo's passport in "The Maltese Falcon") so the Marriott license I made is like the movie's.
The Marlowe license is based on an actual 1944 California license with the information being from the novels and his address being his office address. I never could find a residence address listed for Marlowe.

I was hoping to find my grandfather's CA license, but it seems to have vanished. I have his 30's Missouri one and later ones, but not wartime.

Old threads never cease to surprise me. Something that happened today had me in a quandary as to which thread to post it, so I searched for: "Driving Licence," and this thread popped up.

At The New Forest Run last year, someone from The Rotary Club asked us if we would display our car at their Family Fun Day charity event. We said yes without even knowing what we had let ourselves into.

It was our attire as much as the car that had garnered all the interest. A couple of days ago I had a text to see if I was able to attend a rehearsal with all the other invited classic car owners, which we did.

Tina's baggy trousers had many an admirer, even more so when they learned that she had made them herself.

He had asked all classic owners to bring along our insurance details and our driver's licence.

The UK's driving licence had gone through a number of changes. Up to 1974 it was like a small passport, it then changed to a large A4 size paper monstrosity and nowadays it's very much a credit card size affair and like credit cards it has an embedded chip that has all the relevant details. It looks like this:


I hope that you are still with me, we are getting to the point. So as the chairman was taking a photo of all entrees details he came to mine. Now I am a hoarder, nothing gets thrown away. Remember I said that early driving licences were like a small passport? Well, out of devilment when he asked for my licence he got this:

Everyone gathered around to take a photo, how they loved it. More so when I opened it, there's a tale to tell.

Look at the date of the offence. I was caught speeding on Christmas Eve and fined Seven pounds and ten shillings. Our currency has been metric for fifty years which made the shilling defunct. Such is life. My current licence, which I produced has no such misdemeanor, ah the wisdom and maturity of old age.

I got my first driver’s license by sending in four box tops from my Post Toasties and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
