Dream suits inspired by Hollywood

I've always liked the suit Clark Gable wore in It Happend One Night. It seemed perfect for traveling cross country, sleeping on haystacks or writing the latest scoop in the back room of the local bar. Loved the back belt and those big pockets like you'd find on a bush jacket. In a nutshell a rugged all purpose suit for a man of action.

Sunny: I couldn't agree more, though I think the shirt could do without the shoulder pads. Otherwise, it's quite flattering on her.

Yes, that puzzled me. The top and skirt are a very common mid- to late-1930s combination:

It looks like a suit and the top often has the structure of a jacket and not a blouse; but it's really a two-piece dress.

The costumer got in two great 1930s looks, but did that by combining them in an extremely atypical way. They wouldn't have been worn together. :D

I was disappointed in the lack of belt backs in the third outing, personally. Maybe they just weren't as common in the late '30s? The costuming was pretty well done overall in all three.

Now, this goes without saying, but...

any of Cary Grant's suits in The Philadelphia Story particularly the single breasted, peak lapel number in the opening scene.
His double breasted navy blue suit in House Boat another beautiful suit.
Dean Martins suit in his first scene in Oceans 11.

Can't find a decent GIS for this one, but the suit I always wanted was George Bailey's. Just a plain, decent, year-round, medium grey, Scots-Irish Presbyterian 3-roll-2 3-piece.

It'd be nice if it made me look 6" taller and 40 lb lighter, but hey, we can't have everything.

I love those boats! :eusa_clap I've always thought that type/construction/materials combined to make the most beautiful boats ever made.

Looking at these screen shots, though, I realize I don't think I ever saw The Last Crusade. Fortunately, I did ask for and receive the trilogy on DVD for Christmas, so I'll be able to rectify that before the fourth movie in the trilogy (to borrow from the HHG series.)

I should have grabbed a screen shot, but I was amused to see that when I first pulled up the Fedora Lounge index page the Last Post listed for the Suits forum was shown as "Dream suits inspired by... by Matt Deckard." My first thought upon seeing that (based on how often Matt's written about suits) was "I'll bet there's a lot of them!" :p :eusa_clap

Cheers,
Tom

I must go and rewatch the Jones trilogy.... That shot from Raiders, with him coming down the steps - if my rusty memory serves correctly that's set towards the end of the film, after the brown hat has been lost in the submarine base? Seems odd to see him in a grey one, but then that being the film that was made first, I suppose that the brown hat / leather jacket iconography hadn't been established, so they didn't feel the need to have him in the brown hat all the time that there was in the subsequent films.

I wonder why they put the black waistcoat on him with the white jacket - was there a specific reason for that, what with it being (to the best of my limited knowledge, again) very much atypical to wear a waistcoat with a white/ivory DJ. Maybe it was just cold when they filmed?

Dr. Jones' suits were more than likely a key element in getting me interested in 30s style.

The suits in Tucker: the Man and His Dream I find are all inspiring:

The costume designer knew what he/she was doing with Warren Beatty's Bugsy, too. Be afraid, ladies and gents - this photo reminds me of a photo of a bunch of Fedora Lounge gents from a Queen mary weekend lol ! Of course, it's supposed to be The Mob:
