DOUBLE-BREASTED NAVY BLAZER FROM EDE & RAVENSCROFT.

NB: This is in excellent condition! The round "orb" on the main picture is just a speck on the lens!

This was Made in England. Fully canvassed, with plenty of handwork!

Made by Ede & Ravenscroft, founded in 1689 and the premier robemakers in England, purveyors of robes to the academy and the judiciary, this beautiful, formal double-breasted blazer in navy is fully canvassed and fully lined.

Complete with formal peak lapels, this jacket has pick stitching throughout. It features finished four button cuffs and twin vents. It has three front buttons on the right, and two on the left; close inspection reveals that there was never a third on the left, but if this bothers you, don't despair--the original spare button is included on the interior of the jacket.

With the exception of a single thread bump on the flap of one pocket this is in absolutely excellent condition, and is a steal at just $35, or offer, boxed, shipped, and insured in the USA

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EDE & RAVENSCROFT, ROBEMAKERS.

Wigs, robes, menswear, Royalty.... and women's rights!

Founded in 1689, Ede & Ravenscroft are a company that produces goods that were in exceptionally high demand some 300 years ago--robes and handmade gentleman's wigs.

They are still going strong--still supplying robes to the judiciary of Britain and its former empire, as well as continuing to supply hand-made wigs--just as they did about a hundred years before the founding of the United States. But they have branched out, and also supply superb--and utterly traditional--menswear.

The company didn't start as Ede & Ravenscroft. It was officially founded in 1689 as William and Martha Shudall, Tailors, in London--almost a coincidence in names as this is the year that William and Mary were crowned King and Queen of England. But not of Scotland--which was still as independent of England as France.

In 1726 Thomas Ravenscroft founds his wig making business in Lincoln's Inn Field--the heart of London's legal profession. It thrives for the next century, and in 1811 Joseph Ede joins the firm (now owned by William Webb) as an apprentice. The firm's fortunes are secured in 1822 when Humphrey Ravenscroft invents and patents a new form of wig made of white horsehair that needs no powdering or curling. This wig is the pattern for all legal and ceremonial wigs made today. At Humphrey's behest every barrister who purchases a wig was invited to record their signature is The Wig Book. This tradition continues today.

In 1834 Thomas Adams--Joseph Ede's uncle--buys the firm which then becomes Adams and Ede. In 1837 Joseph Ede is appointed a robemaker to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

Joseph Ede dies in 1862 and his widow runs the firm until her death in 1868, when their son and grandson take over--it is now Ede & Son. In 1871 Joseph Ede (Jr., in the US) marries Rosanna Ravenscroft. He dies soon after--at the age of 26--and Rosanna takes over.

She runs Ede & Son successfully until in 1902 it merges with the wig makers of her family to become Ede & Ravenscroft--although the name change is not official until 1921.

In 1922 something momentous happens. Recognizing that Ede & Sons was run successfully by a woman Ede & Ravenscroft open a SECOND Wig Book..... to be signed by female barristers ordering their wigs.

Ede & Ravenscroft continue to flourish today.... producing the same wigs as were invented in 1822, together with robes patterned on those f the height of the Empire... and, no doubt, continuing quietly to advance women's rights as befits a firm that has been run by women since the C19th and which serves a still male-dominated profession!
