Doniger Contract

What does a Doniger fit like? I have an order in with GW and I'm looking again at contracts. I had a Dubow which was more like a frock than an A-2. I want something trim and flattering without being overly constrictive. I don't know much about the Doniger and wanted to get some opinions about the fit/comfort level. I know it has an inset sleeve which helps with arm movement. I would get one in horsehide as a civilian jacket (Doniger made some civilian A-2s). Thank you.

John's Doniger is a fantastic contract. It is trim around the waist and very comfortable in the upper body. My favorite feature of this contract is the collar. What is a frock by the way?

A frock is a frumpy dress. The Dubow is too baggy for my tastes. I felt like the general wearing it, not the lieutenant.

Jacket looks good on you. I also like the collar. Not the same ol, same ol...

I am 6ft 190lbs with a 34" waist. I have no idea what my drop is from chest to waist. John's 38 Aero is an absolute work of art. This contract is by far one of my favorites.

I've owned a GW Doniger A-2 in the past and currently own a civilian Doniger in the same pattern (posted elsewhere on the FL). If the sizing is right it is the most comfortable A-2 you'll wear. Neither baggy nor tight, it's a very flattering design. Wider sleeve tops, slightly longer torso than e.g. a Perry and rotated sleeves which allow for better arm movement.
The issued jacket (both contracts) are goat, but if you're striving for accuracy avoid horsehide - the civilian Doniger (McGregor Sportswear) was made from dark russet capeskin.

I could not agree with him more. Stick to the correct hide for the contract. The 39 Werber or the 38 Aero would be great choices if you want to go with HH.

I'm not in it for accuracy; I'm in it for looks and comfort. But I will look into the Acme since John probably wouldn't make me a horsehide version. Thanks.

And yes, the Acme looks very well on you. Good fit and I love the shade. How are you enjoying your Ventura?

I'm a 41" chest with usually a 36" waist. I'm 6'2" tall and usually weigh 190 lbs. (I'm a little overweight at the moment, but I'm on a diet!)

I looked at the Acme and it's a lovely jacket. Very similar to the Roughwear in appearance. How does it wear? John warns it's very snug.

I think you might find the 1938 Aero a little too snug. I'm a 40" chest, 31" waist and find it to be very snug.

I'm sure John would make you a Doniger in HH if you wanted.

I think I'm leaning (I know, I know) towards the '38 Aero. Now that you've posted more pics on it, even closer. Thanks for putting them up. At least I'm down to less than 4 now lol

Also - is that the "LHJ101" hide?

I decided I want a 40's jacket. To me, there's a sharp break in fashion from pre-war to post-war. My wardrobe is post-war so i should probably go with a post-war contract. Right now it's the Roughwear, Monarch, Bronco or Poughkeepsie in horsehide. Doniger in goat if I go that direction, but I probably won't because I need this to be a winter jacket too (down to 25 degrees F).

Bringing this thread back to Donigers IMO the GW Doniger is one of the very best contract John currently makes. It is a stylish and comfortable design with the inset sleeves. My 2011 Doniger is 100% spot on which is not the case with all GW contracts. The new Indian veg tanned aniline dyed goatskin is exactly like the goat used on my original Donigers. Good for John to maintain absolute authenticity and refuse to make a Doniger in hh.

There was a GW Doniger in HH on the VLJF a year or so ago (do you remember who commissioned it Andrew?). I recall it changing hands more recently.
Might be worth following up if you're set on a HH Doniger?

Don't be put off the thinner hide Joel. If the cut allows a thin modern insulating layer underneath it'll cope. It's hovering around zero C here and I'm wearing a capeskin jacket without discomfort.
