Don Knotts' Hat

Yet another new guy here. At the end of December I picked up a Scala Hiker at Peter Bros. Hats. Now that it has warmed up here, my thoughts have turned to a straw hat, that four season wool felt is just too hot above 70.

So my question is, Does anybody know of a hat similar to the one Don Knotts wore in The Andy Griffith Show and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken? Thanks.

I'm not totally sure, to me it looks like a very well worn Panama.
It almost looks like he wore the same hat in the Reluctant Astronaut as well. Anyway, here are a couple of pics of what I think you're talking about to help refresh others memories.

Kudos to you,Tex,for knowing about a great "old school" family comedy! :)

Heres a few links of Don Knotts wearing that hat.I`ve no idea what brand or model it is though. Not a bad looking straw now that I`m checking it out.I would be interested to know more about it myself.

Sorry I'm not of any help to your question, Tex. Just had to say, I always admired Don Knotts' hat and sense of style. He acted crazy in the shows and movies but the man knew how to wear a hat.
I always wondered if the actor that played Kolchak in The Night Stalker took notes from him.

Don Knott's Hat

Good question. Welcome to the Lounge Tex. Could it be a cowboy hat from North Dakota?- RIP- My sister once sent me a post card and a dried up horned toad from Rippy,Texas. Ever heard of such a place ? :cool2: :cool2: :cool2:

In addition to the Panama, Barney Fife occasionally wore a silver belly colored Open Roadish/Stratish type hat.

The Panama seems to move from set to set with Knotts. My guess is that he actually owned these hats and they were not just costume accessories.

These Panamas with maroon pugs of various brands show up on eBay quite often. I fished out a Stetson Medalist very similar to Knott's hat but with a wider brim.

Thanks everybody, especially Dan and HMH for the pictures.

Not that I'm abandoning the hat, but I was downtown today and stopped in at Peter Bros, and I think I am going to get the Scala P180 if I've got the money. Just recently getting into hats, I'm still not sure the styles and proportions I like on my head, so being able to try it before I buy is very comforting to me. If I get it, there will be pictures.

RIP - nope, haven't heard of Rippy, but I just try and remember the cities around where I live, and then the major cities. I can do it most of the time.:)

If I do manage to find out what it is, I'll be sure and post it.

Thanks flute and Mr. Paladin for the welcome. You can never have enough Texans.;)

Would ya'll say that Knotts' hat is just a snap brim with a tight crease? I can't tell if it is just a snap, or if the edge of the brim stands up, making kind of a "pan" out of the brim.

It is a snap brim but with panamas it's hard to say whether it will actually snap or not. I own two panamas. One snaps with an audible pop and the other one has no snap at all. It has a tendency to stay in what ever shape it is stubbornly coaxed into.

Hello,

I just recieved what I think is very close to Don Knotts' hat. It's a real beauty from the Sierra Trading Company. They actually don't bill it as a Panama. They call it the Peter Grimm Sicily Fedora, but when It arrived, the tags clearly stated that it's hand woven in Ecuador and made of Toquilla Straw. You can't beat the price of $35.00 for a snap brim Panama in natural finish. The brim is 2 1/4" so it's not like an overwelming umbrella on your head. It looks a lot like the one Robert Mitchum wore in "Cape Fear" and also like the one Don Knotts wore on the Andy Griffith Show.

Most folks here would consider 2 1/4" closer to stingy-brimmed than an umbrella, but I'm glad you like your new hat.

STP doesn't seem to offer any sizing on that hat, though (one size fits most? In which universe?); were you able to order a specific size?

While you're there, you might want to see if they have any Borsalino Alessandrias in stock. I bought one of those on the Internet from them, and it's near the top of my list of favorite hats.
