Does anyone have experience with a Lewis Leathers Veg Tan HORSE jacket?

I've read the monster thread on the VEGCOW, and have confirmed with LL in London that I can have a jacket made in VEGHORSE, but I've never even seen a picture.

I'm super close to pulling the trigger on having one made after years of failed attempts with used LL jackets. I want it primarily as my riding jacket, but want to be able to wear it all day as well.

Lightning, not sure whether to go. 391 or 402, and whether to try a Tight fit as my last true to size 42 had a lot of room.

If anyone has advice or pics it would be really appreciated.

Cheers,

Morgan

I took a few shots of this new hide when they first started with it - see attached - hope this helps?

I do.

Stiffness and weight-wise, it is eerily similar to the particular type of Horween CXL that the Aero is using, except without the waxy, oily finish. But otherwise, trying on the jacket blindfolded would've easily fooled me.

So yeah, all the OTR veg tanned HH jackets that I had tried on in Lewis Leathers store earlier this year felt really stiff and somewhat less comfortable but I'm sure it's just the matter of having them broken in. Though I can't say to what extent compared to the regular cowhide.

The colors these come in are also very vivid and deep, without looking fake like the standard blue or red cowhide often does.

All in all, I did prefer it over cowhide and the regular horsehide but I still liked sheepskin more.

I only have a couple of fit pics I took of these so I hope it helps... And I'm pretty sure this is the EXACT same jacket from @Salmosalar's photo.

It sure does. Thanks very much guys. It's pretty wild looking leather. That said I think I like the look of the VegCow better. I love the way the sheep looks, and I'm sure it's far and away the most comfortable, but I want this to ride in. MONITOR: Is that a standard fit or a tight fit?

I much prefer both the vegecow and sheep but have not seen an aged version to compare for the vegehorse. If you want a jacket for riding I would look at their standard HH rather than the vegtan version tbh….

Why do you say standard cow over veg cow for riding? Does the VegCow seem precious?

More that I think the topcoat on the standard leather is more weather (and rain) resistent tbh - I suspect the vegtan could be a bit more of a sponge than the standard leathers, but I may be wrong. The sheep is also vegtan of course, but again I think the standard leather might be tougher for riding. Horses for courses I guess - pun intended! Maybe you should ask LL for advice directly as many of the staff also ride…?

The standard cow and horse are racing suit material with all the weather and abrasion resistance that demands.

The veg versions are fancier, certainly, and far more expensive but not inherently better.

Man, Ivan, I don't understand why you didn’t walk out there with that jacket (or run, if it was for the price tag). This is perfection!

I would not call current LL leather "racing suit material"... It's also not really weather resistant, a light rain soaks it pretty easily.
I Love Lewis Leathers, but to imply they are racing/riding jackets is IMO misleading.

Personally although i have ridden in my Lewis Jackets a few time i never felt particularly safe doing it.
I would pic a Vanson comp weight jacket or a LW every day of the week to go riding in over a Lewis...
