Does anyone have any experience with Horween's Lux Horsehide (offered by Simmons Bilt)

Howdy everyone,
I've developed quite a hankering for a cafe racer in a tan leather. Ideally, I'd get this from Aero in aged tan steerhide, as inspired by the photo below, but they no longer offer that.

I like the looks of the natural Vicenza, but I'm not a big fan of how Vicenza in general ages. That leads me to Simmons Bilt. I've been around since before the inception of AL, so I know the backstory. Even still, I'm intrigued by their Horween Lux Horsehide in cognac. I'm curious of anyone's first-hand experience with the Lux Horsehide, particularly if it's in cognac. I read that it's softer than CXL, but I'm curious how it ages, how much darker it gets, etc.

Many thanks in advance!

Russet Badalassi looks closer to my eye than SB's cognac, and better. Of course, there's so many variables at play with photos and computer monitors that it could be completely misleading. Best to see a sample in person. And then understand that even then it can vary from batch to batch.

SB does a goat hide called seal- it's more of a russet, heavier than Aero's goat and really nice. Debs will send you out samples. SB glues and skives (at least, on my custom jacket they seem to have done. It was bomb-proof). so maybe ask about that, too.

Thanks for the tips. I have been looking at Aero’s Badalassi options, but I favor the natural Vicenza for color alone.

I have a jacket in Lux Horween, but dark brown, so I don't know if this will be useful.
Compared to steerhide, it's much more supple and doesn't need much breaking in.
Compared to vicenza, it feels much more substantial.
The texture is generally smooth, but with wear, it starts to show some grain in places.
The one I have is supposed to be teacore, but there's no real fading. It's more a question of the lighter undercoat showing at points of strain like the edges.
I'm not sure it's close to what you had in mind.

Please excuse the crummy iphone pics, the color is particularly unfaithful.

I think that Thedi's buffalo is very close to the colour you are looking for, check their instagram page.

i agree, but do they make a simple cage racer? I mean, I like the quilting that goes into their single rider, just not for myself.

I have some SB hide samples here and the Lux is very nice. The black sample I have does indeed have a lighter tea core like you mentioned. The Hudson horse hide is also nice. Similar to Lux but no tea core. The Blattwerk is nice too and is an oil tanned hide. The Hudson is my favourite of the samples they sent me.

Just e-mail SB and they will send you whichever samples you are after.

Thanks! As a matter of fact, I think I did in the trucker thread, but I should post some new ones, because in the meantime, I had the jacket shortened and slimmed, and it fits much better.

This jacket is done in what Aero called “aged tan steerhide”. It’s long gone so you’ll have to try and find a color that’s close. It was one my favorite colors and I owned two CR’s in it. One went to a member here and showed more wear than the first.

This hide is about the same weight as vic but doesn’t have the somewhat printed look that some vic does. It would vary in color from Orange in bright light to baked tan for lack of a better description.

Yep, that’s the one. I know it’s well-known around here, but, man, you’ve had an impressive run!
