It's called "Tumbled"

Chromexcel Front Quarter Horsehide (CXFQHH) and Chromexcel Steerhide (CXSH) follow the same production process and share similar features. However, CXFQHH has a denser fibre structure which results in sharper crease marks, a longer break in period and generally less grain than CXSH. CXSH is also generally a bit thicker and heavier than CXFQHH:

“Tumbled” options: Exactly the same Chromexcel FQHH that we have put through an additional dry-tumbling procedure which speeds up the breaking in process, knocks off some shine and can bring out substantial grain – end results can be quite unpredictable with each hide being unique.

CXFQHH general weight/thickness: 3oz/1.4mm CXSH general weight/thickness: 4oz/1.7mm

So they replaced battered with "tumbled"

It's been tumbled as long as I've worked with Aero.
Battered may have been used as a term somewhere, but I would think it means the same thing.
Did you ask anyone at Aero?

I seem to remember that they used to offer a CXL FQHH that was called “battered”.

I believe it was more a description of the optics than a tanning or processing option: a caramel colour hide with a heavy pull-up effect that made it look kind of worn (or battered).

That’s the one I remembered.

IIRC Ken discussed this on VLJ.

It’s not CXL. The leather they used was so heavy that it didn’t work as well for its intended purpose. The battered steer is still around, used on Shackletons and A-2s especially.

If you are referring to battered (aged) tan steerhide, which I think might well have been one of Aero’s absolutely most beautiful and perfectly finished leather offerings, it is LONG gone. I had two jackets in it. Thick, soft, crazy pumpkin color. Its history. Had I known now what I know then, I would’ve ordered a wayfarer in this hide and f@&ked off.

Beautiful stuff. It’s actually THE hide that made me love Aero.

Battered steer is still offered, as far as I can see after a quick look.
heres a photo of my Aeromarine in battered steer, after about 5 years of light to moderate wear.
