I recently acquired a Dobbs fedora from the '50s - at least I think so. It doesn't appear to have been worn that often, as the liner and sweat band are in excellent shape. It needed a bit of a brushing, as it was quite dusty. This in in spite of the fact that it came in its original box. Once I did, I was rewarded with a rich brown colour.
There is a label on the inside of the sweat that appears to have been printed out on some primitive printer (I'm saying this based on the font), and it says that said chapeau is from Lincon Park, IL. I don't have it here with me, so I can't give more info. I'll try to post some pics later.
It is in excellent shape, save for a few nibbles on the underside of the brim. They aren't noticeable if you are wearing the hat. What I think stopped the critters is the felt itself. It is quite thick and heavy. I have another vintage lid from roughly the same period (40s - 50s), a Royal Stetson, and that felt is much thinner.
The brim itself is between 2 1/4" and 2 1/2" I think. I haven't taken out the measure yet.
Does anyone know about Dobbs products during this era? There is no model name on the band or liner. It only says "Dobbs", and the liner "Dobbs New York" or something to that effect. The hat itself looks similar to a '50s Dobbs Twenty.
