Hello All,

I went an entirely different direction with this one. First of all, I bought a hat from eBay, something I thought I would never do. After wiping it down with alcohol and touching very doorknob in my house, then repeating to myself, "Come in with the milk, Come in with the milk..." for about a half hour, I decided to post pictures. :)

I bought it because I really liked the ribbon. I think it is one of the nicest ribbons I have ever seen. I also like the golden color of the straw and the "Fine Milan Braid" is really interesting stuff to make a hat from. The small brim is a new experience for me and I am getting used to it.

I see this hat as a sort of Bing Crosby vibe.

So, what do you think? Is it a good look for me? Any suggestions on how to wear it and what to pair it with?

All the replies seem to have disappeared!!!

Either that, or I am crazy!

I wonder what happened? I've never seen posts just fall away like that.

But, I saved some of them and my replies:

Man, that is one stingy brim, HJ! You are one hep cat now, that's for sure!
Thanks Jack, I appreciate your comments.

Slick hat HJ, Im with you on the short brim. I like them at least 2 3/4. But the hat looks really good on you and Im sure you will enjoy it this summer.
Thanks, RBH. This is something new for me. I bought it for my collection, if you will, but then I looked at its golden color, and I liked it.
I will wear it in the summer, but I don’t know how much shade I’ll get out of the brim!

I really like it. To me, brims larger than about 2 1/4 just look enormous. My favorite brim would probably be 2"-2 1/4".

That stingy brim looks good on you, I especially like the first shot. I think at the 'Lounge a lot of people get worked up about wide-brim high-crown styles whereas I think the best method of getting into hat wearing is making a personal choice on what works for you head/face shape and general clothing style.
I agree that most folks, and I include myself in this, are crazy about the wider brims. I think that if things were like the old days, we would be trying on all sorts of styles and crown heights and brim sizes to see what works best. These days we usually grab a hat that pleases our eye, not necessarily compliments our faces.

I never thought it would look decent at all on me until I tried it on.

That's sweet!

I've been shopping for a nice straw like that for the summer. I have the panama, but sometimes I want something besides white. I like the ribbon too.

I just picked up a nice stingy homberg from dobbs in a navy blue. It's so not what I usually wear, but I really like it. I wear it at night as it offer no sun protection. I don't even snap the brim down. I look a bit like Norton, but I don't mind.

great hat.
Thank you, Shamus. You know, it was the ribbon that got me. I really like the color and the stripes.
I’d like to see that homburg.

NICE hat...!!

I looked at it but I have big head syndrom... :-( As to what to wear. Well I highly suggest a "cocktail" shirt (basically looks like a bowling shirt without all the silly colors and patches.) I also suggest short sleved square-bottomed Dickies shirts...one more...here in So Cal. the call them "Mexician Wedding shirts" (That was first told me by an elderly hispanic gentleman) Same basic cut as the above ones but with 4 pockets, 2 on the chest as normal and two near the waist.

They all give the same martinis in the back yard on a Saturday evening with the 1963 Chevy Impala parked in the drive vibe...ahhh...sweeeet.

(Looking over my shoulder, "Honey, where's the cocktail shaker!? Lets invite some friends over...!")
Magus, excellent suggestions! I actually have several guayabera shirts (Mexican wedding shirts); it goes along with the Hemingway persona!

“Cocktail shirts” sound a bit like what Tony Soprano and his crew wear. That might be a good look for me. ;-)

If I remember well, most of the replies suggested a vintage Hawaian shirt with the hat. I think that a white short-sleeve shirt would work too, untucked and with 4 pockets, like the one the Fuentes always wear in cigar ads. It's a common shirt in Latin America.

What's the name of that Spanish shirt?

It is something like Guaybarra. Or Capybarra no that's the giant guinea pig.

You can also tie that shirt to a really loud patterned jacket like you would see at the race track! (Only for laughs though.)

I found one exactly like that in an antique store in Franklin, TN 2 weeks ago, HJ, that they were asking $45 for, and in no where near as good a shape as yours. It was a size 6 1/4 too, so needless to say, I wasn't a bit interested.

Looks good on you. We're used to the wider brim in your photos, but heck, an occasional change is nice.

Oh, I think it's the system being squirrelly today. Took me quite a few times to get logged in today.....something that rarely occurs with FL for me.

This ad from 1957 gives you an idea how they used to dress in a straw hat like yours. Notice how the girl is looking at the guy in the casual shirt. ;)

I just threw this one in. ;) On my home computer I think I have the ad that matches your hat. I will see if I can find it tonight.
Nice hat. A Milan is always a good choice. It has that natural straw look.

J

A guayabera shirt is the perfect choice for that hat!
Thank you, Feraud. I may bring it to NYC. I am definitely bringing the Borsalino

Hello Michaelson,
The FL is fun to expand the entire hat universe. Over at COW, you get accustomed to seeing one type of hat. Here, I can branch out a little. It was a strange adjustment, but I do like this hat.:)

Mr. Powers, Thanks for posting those ads and any more you have would be greatly appreciated!

I look forward to seeing them. Any chance of you brining along an AB? I have been wanting to see one up close for some time.
