I just recieved this Dobbs 20. It was listed as a dark blue, not sure how that came about, it is jet black. In the listing, it was obvious that it was quite dirty. A little vacumeing followed by a good brushing and a Lexol treatment and it is quite the hat.

when it arived it looked like this

I rather enjoy it, I picked up a half dozen or so from several outlets that were dirty or crumpled. A little time and what was to be thrown out with the trash, gets a new life. I forgot to give the measurements before, so here they are. Brim 2 3/4", crown 5".

Actually I do too. It is just that being as businessman has made me look at the reason someone would list or sell something in a condition that will assure they won't get what they could. I am all for letting them take the loss but it just defies common sense. Perhaps laziness or not knowing how to do it plays a role. [huh] :p

Regards,

J

P.S. 2 3/4" brim. Now thats a good size. :eusa_clap

I follow what you are saying JP, kind of like the person that goes to trade in their car on a new one piled full of trash and in need of a car wash. This is a very nice hat, the leather sweat band (at 2") is supple with no stiffness at all. I can find no size tag, but it fits like a 7 1/4. Any ideas on the age?

Ditto

What all them guys said. Love that bound brim.
I'm guessing it's 1940s vintage. Wonder how long ago the Multnomah Hat Shop in the Multnomah Hotel went out of business.

Excellent

Wow Bud,

You did a great job of cleaning it up. BTW I have a couple of stubborn spots,
looks like chocolate shake, in one of the hats that I picked up on ebay.
I tried streaming and brushing, but there is still some of the stain left.
Any tips for getting this type of stain out?

Try a white rubber hat sponge. If you can't find one locally, I'm confident you could score one online. Maybe one of our vendors has 'em?
Even if the sponge doesn't take out those stains, Stoney, it's still good to have one around. On a car trip my wife spilled a bit of her latte on my light-gray Mallory. Once we were back home, a couple of hours later, I used the sponge and it took the spots out completely. It works sort of like an eraser. It kinda gently lifts the surface of the felt and takes the surface soiling with it. Beats the heck out of subjecting the hat to a dip in solvent when it really doesn't need it. And it costs a lot less, too.

I use denatured alcohol as a cleaner on food stains, you may want to check with Art. He is the expert, I am but a novice.
