Let's see, the worst I've posted before: "Hey! Chester A. Arthur!" Probably because of my whiskers.

The best was while waiting for the bus. The bus pulls up, the door opens, and the Muni driver says, "My! You look good enough to eat." I was wearing a straw planter hat from Art, red bow tie, white shirt, tan gabs, and a blue silk sport coat. The compliment definitely put a spring in my step that day.

That's about the kindest construction you can put on an incident like that. Hope the child's sense of aesthetics is not corrupted by a mother who may be carrying some bitterness around!

My dear little brother usually greets me when we meet up with "Look! It's the slapper! Erm...I mean flapper!" Of course it's a running joke and I find it quite amusing (if he ever thought he'd hurt me with it, he'd fall over himself to apologise). That's the closest thing to offensive I've ever heard.

One of the nicest compliments was at a friend's Christmas Party, when an older gentleman I love dearly sidled up to me and, surveying my circa 1922 green velvet dress and acessories, said with great sincerity "I'm so glad to see the 20s live".

If the child has a strong enough character, she won't. My mother was the type of female we've been discussing in the PR (one of those awful jealous and spiteful types) - she never ever had a good word to say about any other woman. In fact, she'd go out of her way to be incredibly bitchy. It was annoying, tiresome and actually quite sad at times. Stupid thing is, my mother was a real looker herself, so I have no idea why she could never accept that others could be too.

Anyway my point is that her attitude and behaviour only affected me in a positive way - as in how not to be! If she said someone was unattractive (my word, not hers), I'd automatically look for something positive in her. And always found it.

I think so, yes. I have no idea what prompted such a remark from her, she looked very down to earth, not the sort of person who you would ever suspect of such a comment. People are strange.

When I was teaching, one of the reception year boys (he was almost five) took my hand and told me I looked like "The most gorgeous lady in the world". I smiled and asked who he was talking about, thinking he was going to say his mother. He threw his arms around me, hugged me tight and exclaimed....

"Cruella de Ville. I think she's wonderful!"

That is too funny! I guess kids call it like they see it--but hey, he thought she was pretty and that you were too (and you are, dear :)) Comments like that are the risk you take with five-year-olds. In fact, let me tell you about my sister and her five-year-old son. My sis is dark haired and prone to rather thicker eye brows and somewhat of a--er--mustache. One night she said goodnight to her son and he said "Goodnight, Sir!" She didn't think anything of it until he said it again, to which she asked him why he called her sir. He replied "Because you have a mustache" and laughed evilly ;) She made sure to bleach it that night lol

I just remembered. It was snowing this morning when I went to work so I wore a black wool trilby that my son gave me this past Christmas. A beater, but fitting the day.
Walking thru the Port Authority in NY in my black hat, black leather coat and scarf, a woman tried to stop me to take a free stress test. After politely refusing, she remarked " you look like a movie star ". I took that as a compliment and didn't wait around to determine if she meant George Clooney or Wood Allen.

Worst:Hey where is your whip. Does not matter if I am dressed in brown Fedora and Leather Jacket or I am in my 3 piece black suit with steel gray fedora.

Also when I wear my kilt and Prince Charlie Jacket, I get the usual "Nice Skirt" comment.:rage:

You know why they call it a Kilt? Because, a lot of people have been kilt for calling it a skirt.lol lol

if she thouhgt you looked like a movie star, maybe she was after your money :p

I like that line! I've only very rarely gotten any comments about my "skirt" (and they're usually from friends who are just joking with me, but are actually quite impressed with it). There was one time, though, I was wearing my kilt at work, and one of the security guards said "nice skirt!", in a sort of sarcastic tone. I replied "Nice uniform!" (they aren't).

I don't think I've ever gotten a single negative comment from any strangers, though. Lots of "what's worn under the kilt?" questions, though...for which I have a whole raft of responses :)

I don't have any real vintage clothes yet (just joined the Lounge recently and started getting interested in vintage stuff, acquiring vintagey-style stuff like shoes, accessories, etc.), but I will tell you that having learned to wear a kilt just about anywhere, and realizing that most people are either not paying attention to you at all or are admiring your attire, I don't think I'll have much concern about wearing vintage stuff (hopefully soon!). I suspect part of the reason I never get negative comments is that I wear what is definitely an unusual (for Los Angeles) outfit with confidence and authority...I'm not uncomfortable in it, nor self-conscious of it...it's just "me", who I am.

Best: Usually just smiles or kind gestures from older people.

Worst: I get Amish or menonite all the time. I wear a black Homburg with a heavy black wool overcoat and I have a long goatee which is now bordering on a narrow beard. Thus, the amish comments.

People have also have had me take photos with them. Anyone else have this experience?

One of the times was this past New Years Eve and even though they were both drunk, somewhere there's a photo of me with two of these men. lol

Another one was in Hollywood when I was walking up the stairs at the shopping center on Hollywood and Highland and this girl ran up frantically to stop me and asked if I was a celebrity.

I get this all the time:

"You look like you're from the 70s!"
"That dress is really cool! Is it 70s?"
"Are those glasses from the 70s?"
"I like that headband! It's very 70s!"

Anyone else get mistaken for "1970s"??


And people are ALWAYS asking to take pictures of me and my husband. Once in London a French girl just ran up in front of us, took our picture, and ran off!! Another time in the mall someone was doing a school project on fashion and asked to take our photos. Just hope he didn't say we've been influenced by "the 70s!"
