Do You Get The Picture?

How often do you get what's in the picture? A rich hot fudge sundae on that bill board that makes you drool but doesn't look quite like it when it's served. The other day, I decided to go to McDonald's and try their Big Mac since it's been years since I've tasted them. The picture in the commercial seemed tempting and lusciously big. After all, it's a BIG Mac! Wrong! When I got the sandwich, I was shocked to see how small it was! It didn't look like that luscious photogenic sandwich they were advertising. The meat lacked dressing and it was lopsided. The lettuce were but a few sprinkles, etc... That just wasn't the same Big Mac I had back in 1983!!! Last week we went to a sushi place with their pictures of sushis in their menu. They were thick succulent pieces of morsel that no one can pass. I thought the flavors should exceed the photograph once I put this in my mouth. But when it came, it didn't look like the picture at all although a few similarities. Still tasted fine, but how much more if they much the picture? This whole scheme of commercialism is quite often deceptive to the consumers who expect to get what they see.

I hate hate HATE car commercials that have the car doing zippy things and then the small print says closed course, professional driver, don't do this at home. Why show me the car doing spiffy cool things when the car isn't supposed to be driven like that? Grrrrrrr :rage:

A local TV channel did a comparison some time ago comparing the ad pix to the actual product. As I recall there was like maybe 1 out of 5 that actually looked as edible and looked as large as the ad.:eusa_doh:

But seriously, food ads are, as I recall, regulated to ensure that what is portrayed represents what you actually get.

I visited the Sunset studios and watched food photography shoots. They could substitute mashed potatoes for ice cream, but the representation had to closely mimick the real thing.

Now, a food stager, for a photo shoot would carefully assemble a Big Mac to make it look as tempting as possible. As we all probably know, the real thing, produced by a minimum-wage worker with bigger dreams, probably doesn't put the same "love" into your sandwich

And now we can worry about whether the ingredients are safe.

'cause then there would be no real reason to buy a Ferrari! What's the fun of sitting in a moving used car lot? :D

Yes, Snake Oil is alive and well in the 21st Century!! lol

I think the ones I love are for diet pills- they give you energy, decrease appetite, and help you lose weight.
Hmm, so does speed, crack, cocaine, caffeine....
Advertising is a fascinating creature- take a product, convey an image, convince the buyer the two are related. Yeah I'm babbling.

I should add though, on the "Big Mac" thread, I _rarely_ eat McD's. I had a Cheeseburger for the first time in years and the creepy thing is, it didn't even taste like beef.... Ew.

Earlier this year, McD's test-marketed a new burger in L.A. to compete with Carl Jr.'s Six Dollar Burger. Like a sucker, I bought one. In the photos and commercials, the patty looked about an inch thick and juicy as hell. Instead, I was handed a burger maybe only 10% thicker than a Quarter Pounder. And not very juicy at all.

I've stuck with the Six Dollar Burger after that. It's at least a pretty close match to its advertisements.
