"You're not very tall, are you."
"I try to be."

The thing that took some getting used to here on the Lounge is getting compliments from men on my hats and such. At 340 pounds, I'm not really used to getting compliments from either sex in real life.

I'm right there with ya Lovely(way to go btw)! I've lost almost 80 and I guess I still feel like the fat girl even tho it's gone, and it's my second time around. Lost over 60 the first time. What I really hate now is "if you lose any more weight you'll disappear...."

Nikki
I know, even tho i want to loose another 40, I still see myself thru the "fat girls" eyes, and I am constantly concerned about how others view me, and if the outfit that day makes me look heavy. I guess I will always have the perception of myself.

Just for an equal opportunity moment ;) , I had to interject something here.

I think some of the remarks you ladies have gotten from men are ridiculous. However, women have said some pretty silly things to me.

Some of the comments I've gotten from women over the years(a couple of these are obviously from my single days):

"You're kind of cute, but you're too short and you have a baby face."

Steve

I like baby faces, and I dont like tall men, but thats just me!!!

I used to get the "You would be so pretty without your glasses" or "You would look so much nicer if you just went home and put on something normal." And those came from guys that I think were interested it me! :p lol

Sincere compliments I appreciate. There are days I get complimented in my office by a couple of different people, but then I don't get one for quite a while, so I know they mean them when they say them.

Oh, the freakn back handed compliments :rage: To me its worse than saying something mean out right.

Yes that was Joey's Pickup line.... I love that his fav food or sandwhichs or specificly Meatball Sandwhich's. No Joey's a New Yorker actually his family is from Staten Island. No New Yorker would call it a Meatball sandwhich... Here it's a Meatball Hero... But most places in the country wouldn't understand...

Where I live now in Pa its Hoagie. CT is Grinder, La is Poboy ect...

"You look nice today" =/= "Oh yeah! Mama knows how to walk!"

I'm sure he meant well, but not all compliments are very complimentary. :eusa_doh:

Yip. You have to be so careful what you say. I used to know a girl who walked on air for a week because soem guy in a club sincerely and non-slimily told her she had "magnificant breasts." "Nice tits, love" on the other hand......(!)

It can be hard at times for a guy to know whether to compliment a girl or not. I erred on the side of caution with a friend (that's "friend" in the sense that we're good friends, I'd like more, she doesn't for now anyhow) last week, didn't mention her hair (she's changed it since lasy I saw her) and regret it now. Bah.

The one rule I live by absolutely when complimenting a woman - or anyone, I guess - is: never say it unless you believe it. Don't bullshit a girl and say you love her dress if you think it's hideous and doesn't suit her.

As for receiving sincere compliments - oh yes, I'm all about that. If I'm being brutally honest, I have a very pronounced problem with self-esteem at times.... mostly I deal with it. Compliments that I know are sincere definitely help, and I'm always polite in accepting them - on a good day I'm even halfway to believing some of them might be true.

Girls and women have that special view and very often complimented my eyelashes, when I was teenager. Of course, they are kind of female and cute, but these first-world-problems, some people got, are just nerving.

My wife and I get complimented on our dancing regularly. Not when we are at a dance with a lot of other ballroom dancers, but at functions that have a dance floor and dance usually amounts to a shuffle aound the floor after copious amounts of liquid courage.
Some compliments, or derogatory remarks, we never hear, or see, we are not into social media. But the occasional one surfaces from time to time. Is it possible for a compliment to be insulting? Or an insult to be complimentary. Click on the link and judge for yourself.

I was told it is an axiom from the Buddhist tradition. Compliments and criticism are sides of the same coin. If you accept one and are swayed by it then de facto you must accept the other side and be swayed by it as well. Best to be grounded in spirit and allow both to flow around you.

I’ve long held that people with low self-esteem have a considerably firmer grip on reality than the run of humanity, and for that reason I generally prefer their company.

When my wife pokes fun at me my usual retort is.."No wonder my self esteem is so low" Her response is usually..."A howitzer could not dent your self esteem."

Well. My wife works in an environment (an elementary school) where she is constantly being showered with compliments and love. I, however, work in a world that is much more stingy. I confess that on those rare occasions when I do get a compliment, I luxuriate in it for a day or so. On the other side, as I’m old enough to generally be thought of as “harmless” now, I find that I’m no longer hesitant to give a sincere compliment. The other day I told a woman (who I had not seen in 2 months) that I loved what she had done with her hair. She was over the moon that (a) I noticed, and (b) I was sincere and outspoken in my praise. Most guys more her age just opt to say nothing. It is the safe bet, after all. I don’t know. It’s a tricky business. But I guess honesty is still the best policy. (As long as you can avoid being “creepy”, of course. )

I'm one of the lucky ones. I receive a fair amount of compliments in more categories than looks. I admit it, I like them and as I get older they do change. I can't imagine getting tired of them. I may not agree with some in context or delivery but the intention is genuine in my eyes. They may see or say things differently than myself. I for one appreciate the differences in life, views, and background. I'd debatably be less than the judgement if I perceived them in any other way.

What I have yet to figure out is how to respond you look like so and so? I get this often and always have of one person or another. Some repeatedly throughout the years but have yet to figure out an acceptable response. Thank you feels weird to me and some even respond the same. But what are you to say?

I frequently get some variation on the “nice hat” commentary, to which I usually respond with a simple “thank you.” I long ago learned to avoid telling that I made the hat myself. It’s not that I’m modest about my handicraft so much as I wish to avoid a well-intentioned but ultimately fruitless conversation with the person offering the compliment. Sincere as the observers’ interest might be, I have never once had such an exchange lead to a sale. The audience for custom men’s hats is a minuscule slice of the overall population.

Attempts at buttering me up are anything but complimentary. They’re quite the opposite, really.
There was a regional manager in the company where I worked who would use a withering put down to those who went over the top with gushing and fawning. He would say that the eloquent way to describe such a manner is obsequious, but even obsequious is better than brown nosing.
