Do you dress TO your hat?

Hello,

The idea for this thread came from the recent thread about Dressing Down a Homburg - the concept was mentioned there.

So, that's pretty much it. Do you pick up your clothing according to the hat you wear? Even more, has wearing a hat influenced the acquisition and selection of, at least, some of your wardrobe?

Personally, I tend to "dress up" when wearing a hat - specially at the beginning, I felt like I did not feel like hats fitted with too casual clothing. Eventually I went past this, and I incorporate hats with the greater part of my outfits, although I do exercise some distinction: I normally wear classic style fedoras with dressier clothes, and stingies with more casual outfits (generally is the important word, I do some crossover, it depends on the particular case, some hats seem more versatile than others).

Not that my most usual dressier is really very dressier, consisting of suit or sports jacket with tie or bowtie, coupled with jeans or similar casual trousers. I wear suits sometimes, too.

BTW, I also have some Newsboy caps, which I use in various dress levels.

Any contributions on the subject?

Regards!

In some ways, yes. My collecting of hats is what gave me the idea of getting an A2 / Indy leather jacket, because they go well with many hats. Trouble is it needs some repairs to the waistband :eusa_doh:
Also if I go out now I do sometimes pick the hat first, then the appropriate colour of attire... I rarely wear suits (though I own four or five) so even my dressier hats get plonked on Mr Noggin without so much as a by your leave.

At work, no, because I have to adhere to a strict uniform policy.

I have definitely begun to dress up to my hats since I began wearing fedoras. They just seem to beg for a nattier look than casual clothing. My cattleman's creased westerns are fine for jeans etc., and go equally well with a suit and tie, but the only fedoras I wear with more casual clothing are my FED IV, Stetson Gun Club, and my vintage Resistol with the wide brim, both in grey tones. The rougher, less finished look of the FED IV felt works especially well like that. I just ordered a Campdraft in the new glen grey color and it should go with casual looks as well. I certainly do not dress down my homburgs; they are such an elegant hat and I enjoy wearing them for special best-dress occasions. That is just my anachronistic view on the matter and I have to say that everyone who posts with their fedoras in the casual mode does look great. I just don't think its me.

What I wear doesn't change much...

Since I retired from my government adminstrative job, I don't dress up very often. My current employer, a small engineering consulting firm, is okay with casual attire. So most days in the winter, it's a vintage Pendleton shirt, clean Carhartt work pants, White's packer boots, Filson double mackinaw, and a heavy tweed 8-piece or a Stetson OR, depending on how cold it is and how hard the wind is blowing. At that, I'm better dressed than my younger co-workers who tend to jeans, t-shirts, and running shoes. Not much fine dining in Cheyenne, so the same gear works on the rare occasion we dine out.

I consider a hat to be an accessory. It's the last sartorial decision I make before I'm out the door.

depends

If I wake up one day and say "I'm going to wear THIS hat," then I'll start picking out my outfit according to what goes well with that hat. Other times though, I decide on what shirt/pants I'm going to wear then work around that and find a hat that works.

However, since I've started wearing fedoras it has definitely effected how I dress. I've gone from strict t-shirt, jeans and athletic shoes to dressing a little better, matching more, wearing polo shirts and nicer shirts more often, and now I don't wear athletic shoes unless I'm actually exercising.

I consider my hat when I consider my jacket. Since my rain coat is a black macintosh, if I need to pull it out then it's either my black pork pie, gray Knox or black Biltmore. My other coats or jackets tend to be more earth tones, so I select accordingly.

As I currently own all of two hats, if I feel like wearing one, I tend to dress to it. So yes! That said, I am expected to dress well at work (I work in a school, so I have to "set an example", so my black trilby normally fits the bill.

My hat is the final thing I put on when dressing so the hat coordinates with the clothing. As long as the colors don't clash, I'm happy. :D

Great point, Carter. We get so accustomed to asking ourselves, "Am I wearing black, brown, grey, or green, today?" Then we grab the hat we think is that color. Some of the greatest looks, however, can be achieved by ignoring our color concepts and just trying on several hats. Sometimes it's surprising what looks good with what (and what doesn't).

This pretty much describes me. I have been known to adjust what I'm wearing on a certain day because I feel particularly drawn to certain hat for that day.

Yeah, I'm with the majority here. I'm about as bad about buying shirts and shoes as I have been about hats. Lots of options each day (affected by season, of course), so I put on clothing and then try hats until one works with the get-up.

Now here's a tidbit which kinda' falls into this thread. I have always had trouble getting to sleep at a decent hour. Some people 'count sheep' - me, I lay there and consider what shirt I might wear tomorrow and what hats might work with that. Or I just mentally go through and try to remember each of my hats. Such pleasant thoughts to send me off into dreamland. Works great!

Gene, I used to do the same thing... until late one evening a mode edge fedora kept trying to convince me that it would look really sweet with a pencil skirt.
I gotta tell you, dreamland became a wasteland of nightmarish proportions until o'ertaken by the dawn.
Since then, I no longer commune with my hats. I hold them at bay with my nail file until falling into a fitful slumber. One must be ever vigilant against the demonspawn of coordination.
Tomorrow, if I awaken entangled in sweat-soaked sheets, I have resolved to remain safely ensconced at home, wearing a fedora, some manly attire, drinking bad coffee and writing worse poetry. :cool2:

For me, the hat should co-ordinate with the ensamble.
That said, I still am in need of a grey suit for my gray Stetson.
I'd like to have a blue suit too and a deep Navy fedora to go with it.

Hope to be able to do so soon as the job thing works out.

Dear Torpedo,

In my short time in this watering hole, I think it has become apprarent that I wear my lid because I can.
In other words, "Goose, your mother dresses you funny".
Havng said that, if I go to a play or someplace where I have to wear grown up clothes, I have found that I will wear my charcoal Sydney or my mid-grey Stetson fedora (now MIA).

But for everyday, I wear whatever...

BUT, today, I "dressed up"...I put on my Reyn Spooner Mickey Mouse aloha shirt to match my Akubra Casual feathers....just to poke fun w/ GTDean...:D I figured if he saw me on the street he'd think I was on the OA dance team going to a Conclave ;) Truth be told, that blue feather is starting to grow on me.

My non-work "dressing up" is an aloha shirt.
