Sometimes marriage kills love I know a couple that was together since 10 years happily. But than they married and the marriage didn´t even last for a year. Some people start to feel too sure of their partner and start to neglect them and stop to take them serious. But you just can´t tell before in some cases. [huh]

Had they lived together before getting married? I find if they do they're more likely to last in a marriage than not.

Yes they had. Than they got a baby and decided to take the last step and get married. I was sad cause I really liked his girlfriend - she was such a lovely and sweet person. But Thomas seemed to feel "traped" afterwards. [huh]

fftopic: I always feel very sad when someones marrage ends. May be I have watched too many vintage films, which end happy ever after, but I reckon if you marry someone you must of been expecting it to of worked and had all these plans for the rest of your life, all suddenly been changed.

It's funny how things work out - to date for so many years and it to not work out - my parents dated for 3 weeks before they got engaged...and are still together 34 years later!

Better to get out of something that isn't working than to endure a lifetime of misery and unfulfillment. These days, being a husband or wife does not automatically mean that ill treatment has to be endured, neither does it mean being shackled to the same person for most of one's adult life.

Marriage has never been a guaranteed happy ever after, a lifetime of happiness and contentment or any of the other myriad reasons people get hitched. It is hard work at times. It also requires a great deal of patience and tolerance...especially if one has been independent and single for a long time!

I think a lot of people these days treat marriage as they would a casual relationship. There is a get out clause, and people will use it quite freely. It's a shame but I do think this is merely another example of the throwaway attitude western society as a whole has today.

On the flip side, some people do indeed get married hoping that their love will be enough and that they will have the fairytale ending but from what I've seen, love rarely lasts forever. I don't think that people should have to feel that there is no way out of a loveless relationship. I'm sure we'd all love to ride off into the sunset but in the majority of cases, it ain't gonna happen. Better to face reality than be disappointed by an illusion.

As far as the Dita/Marilyn thing goes (as with any couple) - only they know the truth of it and it really is not for others to speculate. Get it sorted. Move on. End of story.

Exactly, my granny and grandad would never have stayed together in today's society, in the old days people always worked through problems but sometimes when those problems were too big they *should* have gone their separate ways instead of staying together. My granny had a nervous breakdown and was on strong medication for many many years due to my grandad's cheating ways, but they couldn't, and didn't get divorced.
