Great article in the NY Times Sunday magazine.

My favorite was her response to the question "What one obsolete item could you live without?"

She said: "Everything I have is obsolete. That's the point."

You go girl!

Hahaha, I loved that too! I probably would have rolled my eyes at the whole article if she hadn't presented everything so well.

i spent all of thursday with Dita, she was filming at my workplace. she was lovely and i had to try incredibly hard not to act like an utter fan girl. haha.

I think she's fantastic, and as per usual, she looked perfect.

Better to latch onto an interesting, different image like Dita's than some idiotic, vacuous thing like Jessica Simpson. and if I had Dita's body and her sense of style, I'd do it too!

And there IS a difference in style between burlesque and modern-day stripping...note the word "style" that keeps cropping up here.....ever see the bored looks on the faces of modern day strippers and the smiles on the faces of burlesque dancers? I could go on all day.

But, to each his own.

and just my two cents worth: in her book she lists all the different names given to burlesque dancers and while i know alot of dancers who are offended by the term stripper, Dita does say that Gypsy Rose prefered the name stripper and if it was good enough for Gypsy then its good enough for her.
At the end of the day she takes her clothes off for money, but its a far cry from someone like Jordan.

Nope, double standards. Women can get away with that level of elegance in pop culture nowadays; men can't.

Ah, I misunderstood you. True, there are very few men who could pull it off. But there are very few women, as well.

I got nothing against Von Teese, any girl that drives a New Yorker is good by me, but I'm always amused that apparently "burlesque" is a classier word for "stripper". "Oh no, I don't strip, I'm a burlesque dancer"

Yeah but you take off clothes for money

"Yes but"

and probably have bad daddy issues

But she's got a gimmick so hollywood latched onto her like a leech and now she's rich.

Hmmn. Can't speak for the US scene, but over here in the UK burlesque scene you'll find that a lot of performers take great exception to being labelled strippers as opposed to striptease artistes. Can only speak for myself, but while i would never be in any way comfortable, as a matter of personal morality, gonig to see a mainstream stripper, I adore burlesque. Way I see it, burlesque emphasises the entertainment, humour, classic pin-up style, and - here in the UK, again US may be different - there is no nudity involved. A regular stripper, it's all about the nudity and getting to nudity asap.

More strictly on top, I consider Dita a very beautiful woman, though I don't personally care for her acts, solely because I'm not a fan of the nudity. Yes, for me (and most folks on the UK scene, including most performers), the paisties and knickers really do make all the difference. [huh]

Although, I have to say at a WW2 show I went to in July they had two burlesque artistes and to be honest, even the guys were surprised. They stripped very quickly and to modern underwear.
My problem was that they also stripped from WW2 uniforms which I found a little disrespectful.[huh]
I'd love to see some proper burlesque, a bunch of us are going to London in December if anyone can reccomend anywhere?

But the rare woman at least would be allowed. The man would not be consistent with today's images of masculinity, and would be limited to fringe status.

Burlesque seems to be making a comeback here in Western Canada too..
But there is a big difference as somebody pointed out between a stripper and a burlesque dancer and a belly dancer...
I throw that in because alot of people still associate all 3 dance forms under the broad umbrella of "exoctic dance"..
Strippers in my mine are more raunchy... Burlesque dancers, even tho they take off some of thier clothes, are more demure.. Teese being the operative word here..
Belly Dancers don't take off any clothes at all.. At least non of the ones i know do... So they take offence at being dropped into this catagory...
I have yet to see a burlesque show myself but if the oppurtunity arises i will go see it..

A lot depends on the act - modern underwear can work perfectly well, but in the context that that show took place, it seems to me that something more vintage style would have been the logical choice.

As to the speed of clothing removal.... a lot can depend on where the ladies themselves are at. While by far the majority of the performers I've encountered started out with and stick to the burlesque scene, you do find the occasional girl who has crossed over from being a stripper into burlesque. In the early stages, some of them still have that 'stripper mentality' of getting the kit off as quickly as possible.

My problem was that they also stripped from WW2 uniforms which I found a little disrespectful.[huh]

Different strokes, I guess, but i think that could work well and would be well within the spirit of a lot of military-themed pin-up art from the War period...

The best clubnight bar none in the UK is actually Brum-based (The Candy Box), though they're not doing another one this side of Christmas... In London, there's a whole bunch of regular shows in places like the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, Volupte, The Whopee Club, the London Burlesque Social Club (a new event, first Thursday every month in Madame Jojos)... best place to check for listings, in the first instance, is the Ministry of Burlesque site - www.ministryofburlesque.com.

I'm always up for a Burlesque club with Fellow Loungers... :)

Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese are both business people that have realized the potency and effectiveness their images have on their careers. Regardless of how pleasant or unpleasant those images may be, each one perpetuates the career.

I find it a little depressing how far they had to go, or were willing to go, in order to continue the image, ie ruining their wedding by looking like goofs.

I would find that lifestyle exhausting. I would also find myself quite unable to live with, or be married to, either of those people.

p.s. don't get me wrong, I have more respect for Dita than I do for most fashion/celebrity folks. I believe she is charming and I like her perspective. And as for Mr. Warner, I believe he is interesting and educated, which is more than I can ask from so many of the sludge that fills our radios and screens this day and age.
