LONDON - A Scottish distillery said Monday it was reviving a centuries-old recipe for whisky so strong that one 17th-century writer feared more than two spoonfuls could be lethal.

Risk-taking whisky connoisseurs will have to wait, however _ the spirit will not be ready for at least 10 years.

The Bruichladdich distillery on the Isle of Islay, off Scotland's west coast, is producing the quadruple-distilled 184-proof _ or 92 percent alcohol _ spirit "purely for fun," managing director Mark Reynier said.

Whisky usually is distilled twice and has an alcohol content of between 40 and 63.5 per cent.

Bruichladdich is using a recipe for a spirit known in the Gaelic language as usquebaugh-baul, "perilous water of life."

In 1695, travel writer Martin Martin described it as powerful enough to affect "all members of the body."

"Two spoonfuls of this last liquor is a sufficient dose; if any man should exceed this, it would presently stop his breath, and endanger his life," Martin wrote.

Reynier put Martin's test to the claim and consumed three spoonfuls.

"I can tell you, I had some and it indeed did take my breath away," Reynier said.

Bruichladdich, a small privately owned distillery founded in 1881, plans to make about 5,000 bottles of the whisky, which Reynier estimated would sell for about 400 pounds (US$695, euro590) per case of 12 bottles. Although whisky lovers can place their orders now, the actual spirit will not be delivered for about 10 years.

"You get a better drink if you wait because of the basic oxygenation through the oak barrels," Reynier said.

In the meantime, customers will be able to watch the whisky's progress on the distillery's webcams.

There's always Everclear if you want something that strong:



"Everclear is a brand of pure grain alcohol, available in 190 proof (95%) and a less common 151 proof (75.5%) variant. It is produced by the David Sherman Corporation.

Because of its strength it is illegal in many US states, and probably not available outside USA (at least not the 190 proof variant). If Everclear is not sold where you live, plain vodka can be used instead (Everclear is basically a strong form of vodka).

Warning: Can be lethal when used as shots or substituted for water in Jello shooters. "


The Isle of Islay is where the peat-smoked Laphroaig whiskey is produced. I brought some back from my trip there in December. Strange stuff.

The Discovery Channel just did a special on production of popular alcoholic spirits and filmed the factory on Islay.

Some years back, in NYC, I ordered a shot glass of 150-proof rum on a dare. I could hardly drink it and ended up sipping it; if I had chugged it, I think I would have choked to death.

The rum I discovered is usually added to Sangria, the stuff you put on a stove, then add the rum and set fire to it.

What would they do with that whiskey besides use it for igniting something?

I quit rum years ago, recall Puerto Rican 151 Rum with coke, you could light a match to the cap (heck the whole thing) and know it would burn your gut.

That's my family label... Actually, I've been drinking that since college. The 10 year is good, the 15 is better, but the 30 is amazing.

In ascending order of fullness of taste: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardberg. The Lagavulin tastes like it's made with water taken from the bottom of the North Sea-delicious. I've never tasted the Ardberg, but it's supposed to be even more powerfull.

I can't imagine this has much of a nose or taste beyond straight burn. I would be fairly disappointed if this didn't have SOME taste. And 10 year old at that? It just sounds rough and unworthy of more than a sip.

Any more info on this? (I imagine this will get bummed to the other forum)

I was running a register in a liquor store years ago and a guy was buying 4 bottles of Everclear. I asked him "are you going to actually DRINK this stuff?".
He laughed and said "Hell no! I refinish furniture and this stuff strips off old varnish like nobody's business!". Thats a true story.
