Sorry to see this....Not that I am a smoker, or encourage smoking, but, to be honest, I've never seen a connection between smoking on screen and an increase in the number of smokers.......I could be way off base here, but JMO.

In a matter of opinion, I don't find Disney banning smoking in their movies all that impressive. They make family entertainment, so there is really no need to show smoking in their movies in the first place.

I can't say that for films showing Humphrey Bogart or Bette Davis smoking encouraged people to smoke. You hear and read about it often, and I've seen hints to such stories, but hand me someone who actually did start smoking because they saw it in the movies.

Hmm... I'd be curious to see how the study was conducted. Let's try our very own Fedora Lounge: I'd wager money that 90% of the members here have also grown up seeing depictions of smoking on film.

According to a Lounge poll that's already been taken, only about 22% of Loungers are cigarette smokers. I myself replied "cigars" in the poll but I only smoke on rare occassions. Our poll is, of course, non-scientific but I think it's a pretty good indicator of what effect seeing smoking in movies has on a population. Meaning, not much.

Considering that vintage hobbyists favor older movies in which smoking was much more predominate, I'd say it demonstrates even stronger evidence that the study mentioned in the article isn't very accurate.

Funny ... Picture Association in general wants to give out automatic R ratings for any smoking in films ... not just Disney films. Although they talk of going a step further by banning it altogether too. Yet alcohol and drugs are seen frequently, as are incidents of graphic sex and violence.

I figure that pretty soon movies will consist of a non-moving test pattern and nothing else. Don't want to offend or corrupt anyone.

There was a good cartoon in the paper about that...

Two boys are sitting in front of the TV; the parents are presumably elsewhere.

first boy: So, did you get a gory movie or a sexy one?
second boy: Nah, it isn't one of those. But everybody smokes!

Or just constant explosions. No plot, character, reference to reality, etc.
Oh, we already have those.

Odd that Disney doesn't feel the same way about drinking. From today's IMDb News:

Cartoon Produces New Wine Brand

In what amounts to a reverse product placement, a fictional wine depicted in the animated Disney/Pixar movie Ratatouille is scheduled to go on sale at Costco stores in 18 states next week. The chardonnay, 2004 Ratatouille, was produced from grapes from the Chateau de Messey in the Burgundy region of France. Reporting on the deal, Bloomberg News commented, "This licensed bottling ushers in what may be a whole new trend for wine and the movies." The wire service observed that the 2004 movie Sideways is credited with doubling sales of California pinot noir.

So selling booze based on one of their G-rated films is OK? Hypocritical much??

But, but wine is sophisticated liquor!

I also have to agree that the cigar or cigarette acts as a tool and adds to the character. When they are trying to be smooth and mysterious, they are holding a cigarette, when they are a wisecracking corporate figure, they have a cigar.

Hey! I smoke cigars and am not a corporate figure. Now wisecracking is another subject. ;) :p
Another case of nannyism in one case with selective memory for the rest. :eusa_doh: Where are my candy cigarettes?

So Cruella DeVille would have to have some CG work done

You can show rape, murder, abuse to all living things, but smoking, heaven forbid!

Considering all the CGI enhancements used today, it'll probably evolve into just a BLUE SCREEN. :D

Considering that today....they cancelled the wine....

The California Wine Institute has been relentless in trying to make this an issue" that it's a French wine, Foster said. "But the entire movie is based on a French restaurant and French food and wine."

The institute applauded Disney's move and denied that it had any problem with the Ratatouille wine's Gallic appellation. "We would have been just as upset if it were a California wine," said Nancy Light, an institute spokeswoman.

She said her group complained to Disney because the Ratatouille label, with Remy holding a rat-sized glass of wine, appeared to violate the spirit of the code of advertising standards that all institute members must follow. The code bans the use of any advertising that might appeal to people below the legal drinking age by using photos of very young models or cartoon characters, Light said.

But, of course, they will still show us 15 minutes of advertising first.
