Dinner Suit Question?

Hello,
I have a question in regards to what type of shirt to wear with a double-breasted dinner suit. Do you think a pleated shirt or a Marcella front shirt would be a better option. I think I want a fold down collar, but if anyone knows wear I could get a formal boiled shirt made for a detachable collar, and at a decent price, I will consider that also. Thank-you.

Either option is acceptable by both vintage and modern formal wear etiquette standards. I too prefer fold down to wing collars for double-breasted tuxedos, as I find them more comfortable and they are more casual, which is in keeping with a DB dinner jacket.

I am a HUGE proponent of the tall, stiff, detachable wing collar and boiled-front shirt, and Darcy's is as good as you'll find in 2014. But I agree that with a DB jacket, a turndown seems more appropriate. Although Lawrence Olivier as George Fortescue Maximilian de Winter in "Rebecca" pulls off the wing collar with DB jacket quite nicely, so I say it's up to you!

I find that DBs wear a bit warm, since they are kept closed, and therefore I choose a shirt made from a very breathable cloth, such as linen (winter) or cotton voile (summer.) So little of the shirt body shows with a DB that wearing a heavy, fancy shirt doesn't make much sense to me.

Thank-you for taking the time to answer my questions. I am very new to formal wear, and I need all of the help I can get. Also I will probably want to get a cream ( or white) dinner Jacket before summer arrives, and I would like to be able to use the same shirt that I get for the DB dinner suit. Lastly on the shirt from "Tuxedos for less" (posted above) is that collar correct, or is it not a wide enough spread?

No, the fabrics I'm talking about are usually only available trough custom makers. Luxire (a FLounge sponsor) may be able to make a reasonable facsimile for just a bit more than the shirts you've linked to. There is a thread here with their contact info if you care to inquire.

Actually, you really don't want much of a spread on a formal shirt so that shirt is fine. The other one from Clermont Direct has too much spread, IMO.
