When I was about 10 (1957) I had an allowance of 50c a week. When I was about 13 I got an after school job doing errands for an old lady in town, that added up to about 6 or 8 dollars a month. Since there was nowhere to go, nothing to do and nowhere to buy anything in Chautauqua in the winter time, I thought I was pretty rich. I'd save up my allowance and every few months would blow it on a plastic model airplane. Life was good!

We didn't have a hot lunch program at my school until I was in the second grade. I took hot lunch the first day it was offered -- and it was so vile, I never took it again. Brownbagged all the rest of time till I graduated!

I remember the chili and pizza being the worst. How can you mess up chili and pizza?

I've read that some schools are now offering more fresh fruit and other healthy fare. :arated:

There's no such thing as a good school lunch.lol

Well, until you get to the college level. Back in HS, the only time I'd get school lunch was Fridays with grilled-cheese and tomato soup--otherwise, it was Cup o' Noodles, or just work straight through lunch...

And re the original question, I got and still get a very generous stipend, but that's also because I'm the designated "residence administrator" (with CinC-House camping at the office almost all the time--I swear, she makes "workaholic" look like "slacker"--SOMEBODY's gotta do the cleaning, maintenance, yard-work, laundry, dealing with contractors...)

I started with a quarter when I was about 8 and finished with about five dollars when I was 15. After that, every day my father would always ask me in the exact same tone, "ya got a job, yet?" The funny thing is, my father retired a few years ago and has been looking for a part time job to no avail. Now, every time I see him, I always ask, "ya got a job, yet?" He does not think it is very funny. ;)
