Did Schott buy Shinki? Another Shinki STYLE: P617H

1700 dollars is a bit steep but they will eventually show up used for a lot less. And I also remember seeing screen shots of the last Schott factory sale, the special MOH and SJH jackets went for about 1,100 dollars if I remember correctly, which I think is more than fair.

Just a note of correction: SJH isn’t at the factory sale. MOH is because it’s also sold by Schott USA. SJH isn’t even kept in the warehouse. As soon as they finish producing a batch, they ship it to Japan. (The warehouse manager explained this to me.)

Size small
For reference
I am 5 ft 8 150 lbs
39 chest
Size 33 waist
cafecto 40
519 medium

Hope this helped online shoppers.

My pick would be size small and break in if you forced me to buy. But the 613SH was a better value and fit for my frame.

Thanks for sharing. Definitely better looking on you than on the model!

It is pretty clean jacket. If I weren't in-between sizes I may have bought it. Good luck with purchase

I ended up getting the earlier p628h. This is now my favorite jacket. The leather is actually the best I own, better than the flat head delraiser which had been my previous standard. I'm 6'2 so length is fine. Which is sort of the point of schott. They have the ability to offer off the rack options for all siZes and many price ranges in a variety of materials. That they maintain quality, customer service , and local production as well makes them a treasure

What's the SJH and MOH in reference to here? SJH is the Japan-only shinki 613?

Yes, and MOH is a 613 with blacked out hardware and a midweight/lightweight Horween horsehide, sold by Schott retail stores in the US and Schott Japan.

I prefer the 'standard' Schott Italian horsehide to it. As red devil and others have pointed out, often in this hobby we eschew the 'brand' fixation of mainstream fashion but then end up applying it to tanneries and makers.

To the shinki as well? May pop into the Schott store today and check all of these models out if they have the shinki in store since I don't have as much experience with them compared to more of the common Japanese makers we talk about here.

I do love this P617H model not having a belt (less decided on the lack of epaulets) and would dig a Schott being my first foray into a double rider style but it's hard to not be tempted by the J-22 and J-24's of the world...

I pulled trigger on this jacket upon seeing it at the Schott NYC location, what impressed me most about it was the weight of Shinki hide, it is not as heavy as my RMC J-22 which is the thickest Shinki I've handled, but it is thicker than the rainbow country Hercules I own, as well as the RMC J-24 I handled recently, so the thickness of this Schott jacket is really respectable and what caught my eye, I wonder if Schott has a relationship with Shinki that they can get hides like this one for their jackets, probably!
A few other details which I appreciate are
1.the gorgeous wool lining
2. The heavy duty 2 way main zip
3. A stock size Large fit me perfectly, so I was instantly sold

i'm also from NYC and I've never owned a Schott jacket, so for this one to be my first is also cool

Will post some fit pics soon

Schott has better patterns than RMC and Field, for a start. But like I said instead of this I'd get the Italian horsehide in the 613SH or 618HH. (Yes, even if I was given all five options at the same price.)
A few of RMC patterns are actually quite good. Their J24 is solid and does capture the feel of an original pretty well IME. The Cooper 1930s sports jacket they did had an utterly fantastic pattern. One of the best I've ever owned. They don't match some other makers overall, but they're patterns are nothing like some of the bad Japanese brands.

I've never tried on a Schott with a pattern I liked. Their previous aviator has a pretty bad pattern. I think the classic Perfecto pattern is good except it's still too long and modern in my opinion.

I have a lot less experience with Field and my pattern experience with them is poor so I certainly won't argue with you there.

My point is that it is not a simple black and white case of RMC having worse patterns than Schott. If you want a US maker with seriously great patterns, go Vanson instead of Schott IMO.

I agree with you. And the new J-24 is solid; it's the previous J-24 model that really blew up in our circles (I have a bunch of real life friends with it) and that pattern was quite poor imo.

Are there significant differences in the jacket other than the fit? Unless by pattern you're referring to how the cut is made for the fit...

Just saw it in person and it's pretty great. I don't have a ton to compare it to as far as Vanson/Aero/other premium makers outside of the Japanese repro brands, but the leather itself stands up to the Real McCoy's/Fine Creeks/Flat Heads I've felt, especially in regard to price. The stitching/details etc. are not as on point (would prefer a full gusset for the sleeve opening instead of the half one they have or however you call it but that's not surprising.

The large fit me as well and seemed to actually fit much better than any of the other Perfecto cuts they had, and man the liner is gorgeous.

I'm not sure how I feel about the 'hidden' collar buttons instead of having some nice silver pops like a classic perfecto, same for the leather toggles on the zips instead of the ball pulls. But I like the lack of a sewn-in belt and I think the no-epaulets look works here but undecided if I prefer it with or without them.

All in all definitely considering pulling the trigger! Wish it was ever so slightly cheaper though, especially knowing what you can find for the same price elsewhere but I do like the idea of having a unique Schott.

I also can't tell if it has the right snaps to attach a mouton collar to? I don't think it does.

To those who had a chance to try on: how to you feel the sizing translates to the numbered sizing?

Looking at the measurements Jerri sent me, a ‘Large’ seems to be something like a ‘43’ as compared to the 613 S/HH while the ‘XL’ is just huge.

I will caveat that this was the first real experience I’ve had with Schott sizing but I think that seems right.

The large fit me pretty well and of the numbered sizes on the standard perfecto 42 was too tight, and 44 on the slim models was the right size but felt a little bit larger than I would want for a double rider. So I think a Schott 43 is about what the large shinki model would be.

The XL in it wasnt terrible in the shoulders and arms but I was absolutely swimming in it through the torso, felt like wearing a barrel.

I like everything about this except the hidden lapel snaps. Feel like it needs just a little more going on upstairs.
