Dick Cavett on TCM

TCM is currently showing episodes of The Dick Cavett Show.

The episodes of THE DICK CAVETT SHOW that TCM has acquired include one-hour interviews with Robert Mitchum, Bette Davis, Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Groucho Marx and two with Katharine Hepburn. In each interview, Cavett avoids asking for the oft-heard anecdote, instead using his enormous enthusiasm to break down their armor and reach the human inside. TCM will also supplement the classic interviews with new introductions by Cavett.

I saw Alfred Hitchcock interviewed last night and enjoyed it. No commercials!

I saw Alfred Hitchcock interviewed last night and enjoyed it. No commercials!

I caught it by accident. AH was hilarious.

Yes. It is a great film!!

I thought Hitchcock had a great sense of humor! Mitchum should be a really good guest.

One observation I have about the time period. While listening to Dick Cavett ask Hitch questions, he (Cavett) referred to seeing the films on televison or in the theater. It makes me wonder how long it had been since he saw particular films. Realizing that made me feel so fortunate to be able to watch a Hitchcock film on dvd anytime!

What does anyone think of Cavett as an interviewer?

1. He should be back on TV in some form he's terrific.

What does anyone think of Cavett as an interviewer?

He had his moments, but overall I wasn't too impressed by him (I've got years of watching Conan and Letterman to blame for that retrospect).

BTW, did you dig that gold shag carpet on the set?

Yeah, I was digging that carpet. When I told my wife about the show this morning she asked if they were smoking in the studio! lol

I am looking forward to seing more of his shows.

I've really been enjoying these reruns -- I wish they'd get the whole series and run it as a regular thing.

I always felt Cavett's late '70s-early '80s show on PBS was even better than the ABC show -- he didn't have to play Sammy Showbiz with monologues and glitzy sets, and it really let him focus on the interviews. I'd love to see that series show up in reruns too!

Robert Mitchum

I caught the Robert Mitchum interview last week, lots have been said about his drinking, true or false with regards to being rude to those he didn’t like but he was a gentlemen’s drinker, he was frank, honest when speaking, even while drunk, I’d rather have someone tell me to my face that I’m a S.O.B. than lie. I liked his movies, the man no matter what people said. During his interview he stated he was offered the part of Patton, but turned it down, didn’t like desert dust and tanks, didn’t trust those in politics, because power corrupts, how very true, and much more, I’m hoping they repeat this one. It was good, I’ll buy the DVD cause I missed the Alfred Hitchcock interview. Were all so lucky to have (memories) these stars, directors forever on tapes/DVD's

The Robert Mitchem interview was great. Having only seen him playing rather evil characters it was quite a surprise to see he had a sense of humor.

Groucho was hilarious on the Dick Cavett show!
He was funny(obviously), naughty, and socially conscious all at the same time.
I was impressed.

Yeah and I am so much younger than he was and I had to think hard with his comments before they made sense to me (oh yeah...right!!!) Like his opening line from Animal Crackers "I must be going.." guess my brain wasn't as keen as his, I too was impressed at his wit, for it wasn't much longer after 1972 that he started to fade away, lose it and have people take advantage of him. How sad.
I recall he made a number of appearances “A Night with Groucho Marx” on college campuses soon after Dick Cavette. He was hilarious, dearly missed
