Devil In A Blue Dress

Has anyone seen this flick?

The movie doesn't do as great of a job as the novel of examining life in post-war black LA, but it's servicable. I like the costuming. Denzel's working class Easy Rawlins rarely rolls around in suits, preferring the "country" look of a wifebeater, suspenders and a weathered lid. He's smart enough to break out the nice threads when he goes downtown, but otherwise he's a little rough around the edges.

It's almost always the supporting characters that make the movie for me. Don Cheadle as the vicious, affable killer Mouse is great. I love his wardrobe, and the brown bowler is a nice touch. I read the entire Easy Rawlins series last year, and I think Don Cheadle is one of the few actors I could see playing this role.

About the only role I didn't think was filled well was Jennifer Beals. I've never found her to be even a passable actress. In this role, she lacks the air of mystery and attraction to be in a film that aspires to noir status. The costuming is great. The locales are great and make me wish that the LA of 1948 still existed today. The characters are very human, with everyone having their own secret hopes and dreams and pain. Easy is an imperfect hero- quick-witted but sometimes out of his element. It's a close modernization of classic film noir. Some more recent films are more successful in following the classic film noir formula (L.A. Confidential springing to mind), but I do recommend throwing this in your Net Flix queu. I give it a 7 out of 10.

I saw this movie again recently when TCM ran it for it's Race in Film festival. I love the clothes Jennifer Beals wears but, I didn't think she did the role justice. On top of that, since everyone knows Jeniffer Beals is a person of mixed race, I thought they should have chosen another actress, to add some mystery to the plot for those who did not read the Easy Rawlins series (I haven't read all of them though I am a fan of Walter Moseley). And again, maybe I'm just nit picking, but being a person of color, it wasn't a big surprise to me to find out the the Jennifer Beals character (in the movie) was of mixed race I saw "it" in her from the beginning.

And you are very right, Don Cheadle was dead on as Mouse.

BTW, great quote!

Well Worth Seeing

Don Cheadle is one of the best actors working. In Blue Dress he nailed the guy up from the street who was scary to know. In Boogie Nights he was amazing as a porn actor trying to legitimize his life.

For the clothes, the cars, the action, the performaces (Beales hooked me in Flashdance, lost me in this one), it's a good film that for some reason did poorly at the box office ($16M)

I haven't seen the complete film in a while but I remember liking it a lot. One of the local cable stations ran a Walter Mosley biography that made me want to read his books. I thought J. Beals did a fair job in the role. She is very attractive and the "femme fatale" does not necessarily have to be a Shakespearean actress. ;)
Don Cheadle was great as Mouse. He, along with Denzel, represent the best in American acting.
At the end Devil in a Blue Dress E.Z. make an insightful comment regarding friends (did he mean Mouse?) who behave in a less than moral way...

Good movie- not great. Loved Don Cheadle.
Movie version definitely lacked the punch of the novel.

Trivia question: Was Mouse packing an old pre-War Colt Flat Top?
Couldn't quite tell from the DVD- but, if he was using this version of Colonel Colt's Equalizer, it would be appropriate because he was from Texas and the Colt would have been familar, and more importantly, cheap!

The opening scene of Central Avenue 1948 is amazing. I love the look of this movie, and Cheadle and Washington - brilliant! I think the producers did as good a job as they could in translating Easy's story to the screen, given the fact that a film needs to be edited in a manner that keeps the story flowing, and that the novel provides so much insight into Easy's thoughts, feelings and motivations. It'd be a very long film if you had to explain all that the book does!

'Gone Fishin', Moseley's novel that tells the background of Mouse and Easy's taut friendship, is one very dark read.

Ol' Benny (Wes) here does a killer version of "Westside Baby" on his last CD.:cheers1:Of course the original version plays during the title sequence of "Devil in a Blue Dress".

Great soundtrack to pick up. Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk and more make this a great soundtrack to pick-up for a roadtrip!

I adored that song from the moment I saw the movie

Just had to get the band to play it; sounds even better with the Hollywood Hombres' horn section behind it. Very evocative start to the movie!

I'm glad you like our version Flat-Top! I hope we did justice to such a great blues number.

Don Cheadle was even good as the driven FBI agent in Swordfish and outstanding in the lead of Hotel Rwanda. I admit, I often reconsider seeing a movie I may not be interested in viewing if he's in the cast.

Great movie - not good. (Better book though) One of my favorites. Director Carl Franklin is pretty good. I also like One False Move and Out of Time.

I liked the movie very much, and yes, Jennifer Beals was a little stale. Cannot get any better than Don Cheadle, period. I loved the costumes/hair & makeup and the locations were fantastic! It makes me sad everytime I drive by the Ambassador...

Update!!

Oooh. HBO is putting out a "new" Easy Rawlins movie starring Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright.

http://comingsoon.net/news.php?id=14902

===============

HBO Films has acquired rights to the Walter Mosley novel Little Scarlet for a feature that will cast Jeffrey Wright and Mos Def as Easy Rawlins and Mouse -- the roles originated by Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle, respectively, inCarl Franklin's 1995 film Devil in a Blue Dress.

Variety says that Mosley is writing the script, with HBO Films eyeing a theatrical release via its venture with Picturehouse. Rosalie Swedlin and Debra Martin Chase will produce, and Mosley also will be involved in a producing capacity.

The 2004 novel is considered one of the strongest in the mystery series revolving around Rawlins, a janitor and unlicensed private eye, and Mouse, a killer who helps Rawlins crack cases.

Wright and Def haven't decided who'll play which role.

Little Scarlet takes place in L.A. right after the 1965 Watts riots. White cops, afraid to poke into the murder of a black woman when the suspect is a white man she sheltered, draft Rawlins to investigate.

Devil. . . definately needs a 2 disc special edition DVD. Far too much work was put into recreating the look and feel of post-war LA for there not to be one. In fact, Ray features some stock footage that was filmed for Devil. . but not used.

I have high hopes for the HBO sequel. They did a wonderful adaptation of "Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned" by Mosley. I'm becoming a fan of Mos Def as an actor. I hope the same attention to detail is paid to the upcoming project.
