Detective hats

My interest in hats and the golden age comes from much reading of hardboiled detective stories. I listened to them on recordings of the old radio shows.
What literary characters inspire you and your hat choices?

Personally my influences are (in no particular order) most of Max Allen Collins' characters, like Dick Tracy, Mike Sullivan, and Nathan Heller. Also Dashiell Hammett's characters.

I can definitely relate to detectives being an influence in my hat choices. I've been influenced by characters portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, Dick Powell, and others. I was also influenced by the detective video game series Tex Murphy in regards to fedoras.

I love old time radio shows. My favorites include: Richard Diamond, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, Night Beat, The Saint, and Suspense.

Bogart in The Big Sleep

And of course The Maltese Falcon

If I recall correctly his hat in The Big Sleep was a Stetson Royal and in The Maltese Falcon it was a Resistol, or visa versa.

My influences were film noir, old television and my dad who wore fedoras most of his life. He became a stingy brim guy in the 50's and pretty much stayed with them. I remeber a big taupe wider brim in the closet when I was kid though. If you like hard boiled detective books, check out "Hot Springs" by Stephen Hunter written in 2000, but set in 1946. It's Raymond Chandler on steroids.

I have almost gotten this novel before.. now maybe I will look for it again.

Hey there RBH, I like about everything he's written, "Hot Springs" is set back in 1946 and most of his other books are set later in time. He wrote "Sniper" which was made into a movie, but the book is great.

I never saw the TV series, but have several of the radio show episodes starring Bob Bailey, as mentioned previously in this thread.
