Denim Jackets - New or Vintage

Man, I've been banging on about denim for ages. Probably my first WJAYWT was a denim trucker. I love that we've gone all denim headed. At least for the next five minutes until another new/old thing comes along.

I don't think there's anything else. We can only go back and forth and alternate between leather and denim. Other materials aren't really noteworthy. Nothing fun about them so it's those two we'll forever be stuck with.

The current Levi's trucker model with the handwarmer pockets is a more relaxed straight jacket but the original trucker is more triangular and is actually pretty slim compared to the type 1 and 2 (especially around the waist). Take a look at the LVC 1967 type 3 and some of the second hand 70505-0217 without the handwarmer pockets. The Japanese did alter the style so it is not as triangular as the original but a slim straight cut.
The sleeves of the original however are wide and long.

I'm pretty sure that the models for different countries warry as well and to a large extent. For example, a certain model of a Levi type 3 that has been made for the US market will be cut differently than the exact same model, made in Turkey for the Eastern European market. Jackets from the most recent line that I have tried on have all been made for the European market and most hail from India or China. They're quite trim. Like, I couldn't move in an M while it's the size that I had always considered to be what I wear in Levi's.

The most recent ones are pretty good, in any case but nowadays I see nice denim from just about any brand, even H&M and such.

I have at times recommended Kojima Genes offers quite affordable heavy denim compared to Iron Heart and Samurai. Another brand not that well known that sometimes use heavy denim is the Eight-G.

Eight G type 1 is 18oz i.e. slightly heavier than the other brands.

This Type II arrived yesterday. It's certainly a lovely jacket, but I'm uncertain about the fit.

It's around 3/4" shorter than my daily wear borg-lined Type III, but seems to wear considerably shorter than that. And it's pretty snug through the torso.

I've taken a bunch of pictures to show you, with some jeans at my usual rise, and a typical plain old t. Pictures taken both with t shirt untucked, how I always wear it, and with t shirt tucked in, to show relative length. The pictures show it straight out of the packing, with some weird creases that will need to be dealt with - so don't pay any attention to those.

Oddly though, as I've tried it on again this evening, having decided yesterday to exchange it for the next size up, I'm not feeling quite as strait-jacketed by it as I was. Hmm.

Opinions please. What does tfl think?

Honestly, man, I would be ecstatic if I could find one to fit me nearly as good. Definition of a perfectly fitting trucker jacket in my book. Needs some breaking in of course but I think you've nailed it.

Looks good barnabus there are longer fitting type2 on the market and I always find them weirdly proportioned.

This is rigid raw, so I fully expect it to bleed a bunch of indigo to begin with. I would only wear it over darker t shirts for a good while.

But that also means I don't know whether to expect it to shrink a little when it's eventually washed, or to stretch a little as it's worn.

Good fit. Wouldn't want it any shorter. Hope it doesn't shrink...

If needed at all...Soak it. Don’t throw it in the washer. No need for that.

That is a good fit. One size higher would be too big. A keeper.

Still waiting mine, after having a sanforized pants lost 3" inseam on cold water soak + hand wash.... i dont know how to calculate shrinking margin when ordering raw, thank god cuffing denim is an accepted look. And a bit too short sleeve is also more common to see than leather.

Have the same jacket, love it. Mine fits the same. Haven’t washed it and after 3 weeks, no indigo bleed. Great fit!

You're not a cynic! And I agree, it is short and I can see why people'd be uncomfortable wearing it. Few years ago, I would be, too, so saying that it's not a short jacket would be a lie.
I just really like the way it looks.

Just wasted 2 hours at work looking at Eight G denim. Now, just to nail down sizing on shirts and jackets. Do you find you have to go a size up? I think I can usually figure out chest and shoulder measurements on the size charts by the numbers even though they are in Japanese.

I am looking at their hickory striped work shirts and am usually a size M in N American sizing. They make nice stuff by the looks of it.

I am sorry but I do not own any Eight-G garments and even if I do, it would be a bit difficult to compare since I am comfortable in Japanese cut and the American cut is usually too long and too big for me. I would trust the Japanese with the actual measurements on their sites which in my experience have mostly been spot on.
I guess you may have to worry about the usual high armhole and narrow sleeves.
