[Quoted] from dinerman: As an aside, I wonder why RMC has a repro of a mid-'30s talon as the main zip and a repro of a 1950s one on the breast pocket?

It would be surprisingly if RMC uses a 1950's one on a 1930's Style jacket ... ;)

1st: RMC is always very accurate...

2nd: GW uses same style on his ventura & he's also well know for his accuracy:

3rd: Same style also found on a 40's style Jacket:

Very timely thread for me! I have a good customer that I've made a few jackets for with the latest being this Luftwaffe double breasted pictured below. He contacted me last week about making another one in black deerskin with a lighter weight liner. good info, keep it coming!

There has been long history of Custom Deerskin leather makers through out the US. Take in your hide and order a jacket, vest, gloves etc. I don't hunt so not sure how big an industry it is today. I have a couple of Deerskin vest from New Berlin Wisconsin. There are many of these custom makes on ebay. Most of them are not expensive. They come in many different styles, colors. This one, in classic half belt style, just grabbed my attention. The condition is excellent as the fit. Very light weight, like a vintage capeskin. I have not heard of the maker, Milco-West Portland, Oregon. A net search turned up a few pics of sold jackets but no informaton on the maker. Interestingly several links to Japanese Vintage clothing sites. It came from Portland so I ask the seller if they had any information.

The RMC pictured in this thread looks to be a heavier hide.

I bought a JL Powell jacket from @oneterrifichog a few years back. It was either deer or elk hide and I loved it. Sadly, it suffered from what happens often to us larger guys, it was a tad small on me.
I've been looking causally ever since. I'd love to have another one - esp out here in Cali...

I've seen a few older jackets in deerskin. I love the first one Dinerman posted. I also saw a black deer half belt by Aero on EBay in December. It looks very interesting. I'm not a purist by any stretch, so mixing designs with hides doesn't bother me. I think half the fun of having a custom jacket is the option to choose hide, lining, design etc. You have a thoroughly beautiful jacket collection, drenched in shinki and all sorts of fabulous stuff. The deerskin would add some variety? Go for it I say.
