Unless I faced forward in the direction
the bus was headed, I'd get carsick "faster than a speeding bullet".
The smell of exhaust fumes didn't help.
I made it a point of going in to the diner when the bus would stop for a break in between towns instead of
lingering around that bus.
Trailways were the same!

I haven't taken a bus for years. The last time I did ride one (probably 20 years ago) it was quite a collection of interesting folks traveling with me. I used to ride back and forth to visit my older sister. I never had any problems. I wonder how many people would put their 12 year old alone on a bus for 8 or 9 hours nowadays?

Mom never learned how to drive a car, so we rode buses almost everywhere when I was growing up. One route went right down our street and, by law, the buses had to stop at the railroad tracks that ran next to our house, so it was very convenient. I was probably around the age of 10 when I started riding them by myself, and never had any problems.

The last time I rode a bus was when my wife and I took a trip to Alaska in 2011 with her sister and her husband. On the one hand, it brought back some good memories. On the other hand, it made me realize I didn't miss them much. ;)

Last time I rode a city transit bus was during my high school years.
I used my school issued bus card. The fare was 10¢.

My brother was about 16 when I
explained to him the purpose of
a bus “transfer”.

One time my pal & I skipped
the 6th period gym class and instead
headed downtown.

Waiting for the bus at the street corner, my buddy convinced me that
the outgoing bus would take us into town when he came to the end of
the line and turned around.

“End of the line boys!”, the bus driver told us.

“Thanks”, I said,
"We’re waiting for you to turn around and go downtown.”

It was a long walk back home.
We never made the trip downtown.
Although the next day we did take a trip to the boiler room
with the school vi
ce-principal and his wooden paddle :(

I took this photo in the back-alley of
my “Depression era” Schwinn Aero cycle from 1934.
At 6’3”, I raised the seat post when riding this classic beauty around the neighborhood.
The original photo was taken in the 1990s in b&w format.
I used my iPhone to make a copy and uploaded
to the forum which may
explain the color and distortion of the front wheel which you see.

The bike which was built in the 30s was too expensive for most folks.
Not many were sold which later made it rare and $$$$$.

Since this thread seems to have morphed into deco transportation, I thought this crazy cool one would be enjoyed:

From the WSJ "My Ride" column today:

"A 1937 Cadillac with a Swiss body, a 16-cylinder engine and an unforgettable profile will cap a two-year restoration by hitting the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance."

Full story at the WSJ (it is a subscription site, but sometime if you Google a few key words from the story, the WSJ will let you in that way as a free sample): https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-1937...ebble-beach-1531831417?mod=ITP_life_1&tesla=y
