Ive got a really good buddy of mine who wants to get his first leather jacket. He is a Tall athletic fella, tree trimmer for a living, and wants a black leather jacket. Im trying to find affordable options for him so he doesn't have a ton of money tied up in it in case it turns out to not be his kind of thing.

What are the options out there? Halfbelt or Cafe maybe?
Im thinking since he is tall a short jacket is out.
He likes zipper instead of button.

Show me the one that will get him hooked. Our chance to convert him lol

Johnson Leather M200J runs at 550 USD, 3.5 oz black naked cowhide or 3 oz black goatskin available at no extra cost. It's a good starters jacket, imho. Half the price of Aero & friends.

Here's pictures: It's a basic casual jacket, no motorbiking gussets or stuff.

Edit; That or a used Vanson Enfield from the bay, there's quite a few of them floating around right now, in various sizes.

I'd just find a nice used Perfecto type jacket on ebay that would fit him. Good quality Cowhide, $150 or less. I started this way, sometimes I wish I might have stayed this way, but ultimately it's his choice (an you can help guide that choice) as to what will work for him. I'd steer him away from Mall jackets if possible, but there's some nice ones of those out there too. Maybe one like this one (example only, not mine....) https://www.ebay.com/itm/SCHOTT-PER...254066?hash=item1a3b7ddd32:g:QpgAAOSw~HBaIa7m

If he's a tall fellow Schott will likely be too short. I'd be looking for a nice used Vanson or Aero. Maybe a model A or model B from Vanson. Sadly if he's over 6'1" he'll have a hard time not going custom. Ultimately it'd be better to save and wait than go thru the endless cycle of disappointment and $$ loss on ill fitting chances and hopes, found a plenty in the used lot.

There you go! And yes, Tony's reminder on the Schott and being a bit short is a good reminder for me. Been a while since I tried one on.

He really likes that Johnson M200, I think a nice used one would fit the bill just dandy.

It's the M200J, the M200 is different, has shoulder gussets amongst other things. Finding a used one may be tricky, only very few of these around.
