Terribly sad news for those of a certain age: Gwyneth Powell, the actress best remembered for being the longest serving headmistress of television's Grange Hill, has died this week, age 76.

In more recent years, she played Greg Davies' mother in his sitcom Man Down, initially opposite the late Rik Mayall who played Davies' father.

That is sad news. As well as the above mentioned programmes, she was also in some Episodes of Heartbeat etc.

(I enjoyed her era of Grange Hill. It was rather controversial at the time, as it portrayed School life quite realistically, some schools and parents were rather concerned l seem to remember. It did introduce subjects such as Bullying I think and the drug culture.)

Yes, I've been rewatching it from the start in the last year. From the first series, 1977/78ish, I'm now up to about 1990. The issues dealt with come and go, but the quality of the writing in every era still really holds up - better than I remembered is as, actually. It's interesting how I look at it differently too as an adult looking back rather than when the kids were around my own age. Bronson was always the villain back in the day, but on rewatching I found him vastly more sympathetic - and often the character with whom I identified the most.

Yes I remember Mr Bronson, I also remember the P T Master with the beard and Mr Hopwood who later appeared as a baddie in Coronation Street.

I was driving home when I heard this on NPR. They then proceeded to play a song of hers from "Bed knobs and Broomsticks". I was in tears by the end... Good innings and a great career.
