it's always a sad day when one of our music icons passes. I've been enjoying ZZ Top's music since 1971 when I first saw them live. They were just a little old blues band from Texas back then.
Over the years I was able to catch several of their shows and even had backstage, all access passes at one of their concerts. I shared some beers with them on that night after the show.
Behind the glitter and celebrity they are each just regular human beings who caught a roller coaster ride to rock and roll fame. And I can't imagine how the band will move forward without Dusty. Besides being a solid bassist who fit the music perfectly and crated a masterful 'lead bass' groove, he was also the perfect counter to Billy's swagger, both musically and visually, bringing the entertainment value of their act to a level no one else could possibly achieve.
Maybe it's just time to hang up the spurs and let the legacy speak for itself.
Never caught the band live but I did meet Dusty at a boxing match, he was a fan of the sweet science and I was a fan of his. Although I come from the Funk/Soul side of town ZZ Top one of those rare groups that musicians of ALL stripe could appreciate. Blue Jean Blues... Heard it on the X, Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers... I dug that band. They kind of lost me during the "Sharp Dressed Man" phase, but I still give them much respect. As a bassist I also appreciated his skill on the instrument. Man this one hurts.

1930s child star Jane Withers, who always seemed like she'd be a lot more fun to hang out with than that prissy Shirley Temple, has died at the age of 95. And Josephine the Plumber was one of my major childhood role models.

Wasn't she in The Trouble With Angels with Ros Russell and Haley Mills; one of the sisters
at the convent school? :(

Pat Hitchcock, daughter of Alfred, has died, aged 93.

We knew her from her many appearances in the bonus features about her father's films, and her great recollections of his work and her thoughts on his approach.

I had no idea of her many appearances in his films, particularly her small role in Psycho, a scene I recall clearly.

She had a good innings for sure!

Canadian hockey legend Tony Esposito has died, cancer, aged 78.

The Chicago Blackhawks star goalie, brother of fellow Hall of Famer Phil, helped popularize the nkw common butterfly style of goal tending.

Another hockey legend gone.

He was my role model as I worked to master the art of goaltending. I kept trying to get hit in the head so I could paint stitches on my mask....just like his. I did e3ventually switch to a second or third generation mask that offered more protection than the original slab of plastic...that offered not much at all. I used the Jacques Plante model as Tony didn't use it and I wanted a bit more protection. Still have it mounted in my office.

Una Stubbs, perhaps best known today as Mrs. Hudson in the tv show Sherlock, has died, aged 84.

I have known her since childhood as Alice, wife kf the obnoxious Roger in the hilarious Anniversary episode of Fawlty Towers.

She was also in the English sitcom Till Death Do Us Part, about a conservative working class man and his put upon family. This is the show that inspired the American show All in the Family (referenced in the credits). Una played the daughter who married the socialist scouser (Gloria and Meathead charactwrs).

Sad indeed.

I have never seen a copy that was any good, never mind close to being as good, as the original! The Americans tried to copy it.

Disasters.

There is only one Fawlty Towers!!!

To refer to "All in the Family," a successful, long-running prime time series, cultural touchstone, and tour de force for Carroll O'Conner as a disaster is an interesting take. I've never seen the British show, AITF was a pretty solid sit-com.

And though it was a rip-off of "Steptoe and Son," I'm thrilled Red Foxx got a chance to strut his stuff in the mainstream for several years as Fred Sanford.
