Chris Squire, founding member and bassist for the band Yes has died of leukemia, 67.

Like so many electric bassists of my generation, Chris Squire was a huge influence on me. He was a true innovator and an icon of the bass guitar. His band Yes were pioneers of the Progressive Rock genre.
Rest In Peace Mr. Squire, thank you for all the great music and inspiration.

I hadn't heard that. That is a pretty big shock to me. I was a real big fan of the prog rock movement, and have had the pleasure to see, on multiple occasions, Yes, ELP, Genesis, and a few others. Mr. Squire was one of the most creative, innovative bassists I've ever seen. I had no idea he was in bad shape; in fact, I was at a Tedeschi-Trucks show on Saturday night, and Yes is one of the featured upcoming shows. I'd just assumed he was still playing bass. Jon Anderson hasn't toured with them in a while, so I guess it's just Wakeman, Howe, and White left.

The first time I saw them, he played "Amazing Grace" during his bass solo. Today, I give you "The Fish"

I think he was just recently diagnosed, or just recently announced his ailment anyway. I don't think Wakeman was playing with the latest incarnation, as Geoff Downes has been playing the keyboards. But who knows with that revolving lineup. I heard Squire joke about Yes not being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while Rush finally was, and Squire said something to the effect of "it was an easy decision on them, there's only three of them. With us, there's like 20 guys and they can't invite us all to the ceremony."

Yeah, I visited the website after I posted that. So it's just Howe and White, and neither of them are "original" members, though they are members we think of for their classic songs. I got to see them twice. Saw them first on the Relayer tour, with Moraz on keyboards. Then a few years later with the classic lineup, including Wakeman, performing in the round. That was a fantastic show.

This was pointed out to me by somebody on another site. The isolated bass track from Roundabout.

Squire's death made me remember that you can find prog rock fans in the strangest places. Sherman Hemsley, TV's George Jefferson, was a huge Yes fan.

Hey, I just Wiki'd him! He actually recorded an album with Jon Anderson, as he had a history as a jazz keyboardist. I had read years ago he was into Nektar.

A Nektar song is used in one episode of The Jeffersons, and of course, he did the famous interpretive dance to a Gentle Giant song on the Dinah Shore show. I've read where he had one of the greatest prog rock record collections anywhere, everything from Yes, Genesis, ELP to the most obscure bands on the planet.

I only saw Yes on the 90125 tour. I would love to have seen them on the "Relayer" tour.
It is my opinion that "The Gates Of Delirium" is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. They put out a DVD entitled "Symphonic Yes" several years ago that featured the band paired with a full orchestra. On that DVD they played " The Gates Of Delirium" and that song, with full orchestral acompaniment, is absolutely amazing!

Squire owned the rights to the band's name and that is why they were only billed as Yes when he was playing. Now that he is gone it may finally be the end of Yes, though I won't be surprised to see the band continuing under a different name much like they did with the ABWH line up.

Patrick Macnee as he will be remembered by most, in the role of John Steed in the television series "The Avengers".

There have been so many losses recently but Patrick Macnee, so soon after his lifelong friend Sir Christopher Lee, really hit me. Godspeed Patrick.

I was really sorry to read about his passing.
He was a great actor, but sadly many associate him with one role. [huh]
