When I grew up I always thought of Whitney as perfect. She had everything; voice, looks, poise... It's so sad that she did to herself what she did.

I remember reading a Joan Baez ROLLING STONE interview in the late '80s where Baez praised the obvious power and quality of Houston's singing voice, but at the same time lamenting the fact that Houston never sang anything of substance, just empty pop songs. Unfortunately, while Whitney Houston's death was not really surprising, perhaps the saddest part is that her tragic life was the trainwreck you could see coming a mile away. I had a bitter laugh at how that prize prat Bobby Brown was doing a concert and on hearing the news of her death was so overcome with emotion that he could barely get through it. Did you seriously just thank someone for ending someone's life early? This is a thread for last respects, not last disrespects. Yes, you have the right to say what you want and have your opinion, but wow... thanking someone for making someone die early. That's messed up, period.

I can't agree that her life was just a waste. She won several Grammy awards and inspired millions of people. Her music might not have been if substance for someone like Baez or maybe for a lot of us. But even the empty pop music of any era is a reflection of the era, even if it's an escape from it, or a reflection of only a small part of what the populace was enjoying. Many of us on the lounge listen to mostly 'empty' pop music, it just happens to be from the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. It is just as important to us as the music that was making a stand. Anyone at the time who judged it as empty had no idea what it would mean to us in the future.

It does make me wonder if it ever gets through to him that he played a part in her destruction, who knows, he is still human, maybe his tears were genuinely motivated by guilt. We can never know. Even if he said it was guilt, I don't know the man and his public actions never supported it, so... who knows.

If it was drugs that took her or not, it's what she's going to be remembered for along with her music, and any of us who've loved someone who was lost to addiction or nearly lost... we know what a hideous disease addiction can be. No one thinks when they pick up that first glass or drug that they're going to end up addicted and hurt so many people around them. Judgment is really easy. The woman is dead, her family and fans are mourning... and the web is full of useless vitriol about her. Personally, after I post this, I'm off the web for the day. And I'm not even a fan of hers. I just hate seeing the ugliness come out all over the place when someone far from perfect dies. Instead I'll think about the way people used to publicly handle deaths, even of those they didn't like, in the past days of at least being respectful and keeping the vitriolic comments to oneself.

I think perhaps you missed the clear sarcasm in Scooter's comment. I'm certain he did not intend to be thankful for Ms Houston's early demise. It was a shot at Brown for his role in her later addiction.
