"Actor and film director Lionel Jeffries has died after a long illness. He was 83.
Best known for directing The Railway Children and appearing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, he passed away yesterday morning at a nursing home in Dorset.
Born in the East End in 1926, Jeffries served in Burma during World War II before training to be an actor at RADA."

He left Walnut Hills High School to join the Navy in World War II, with his grandfather helping him to "fib about his age" on the enlistment papers, Nancy Howes said.

At Kenner, Mr. Howes not only created the toy oven with which he will always be inextricably linked, but also met his future wife, who worked as a secretary in his department.

I remember Lionel Jeffries in Dennis Potter's You're The Cream In My Coffee (1980). It was about an older couple, played by Jeffries and Peggy Ashcroft, whose stay at a seaside hotel where they spent their honeymoon in 1934 reopens old wounds. In true Dennis Potter fashion there's some 1930s flashback scenes with some wonderful music.

I had always been a fan of Jeffries. Great character actor. But what are the odds of this? Just last night, I was talking with a British friends about Ian Carmichael's passing, and he said, 'The only one that's left from that era is Leslie Philips.' I corrected him by noting that Jeffries was still alive. Then I get up this morning, open the Times, and find Jeffries had passed that morning.

"Willie Davis, the speedy former All-Star center fielder who spent most of his 18-season Major League Baseball career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died at the age of 69.

Known as "Three Dog" for his ability to often hit triples and because he wore number three on his uniform for most of his career, Davis played on the Dodgers' World Series championship teams in 1963 and 1965.

A guy I know died. Here's part of an article that ran in our paper last year.
"Stan Merrill's been in a handful of bands, including Invisible Party. He e-mailed this recollection of the night Alex Chilton came to Scorgie's:

I distinctly remember being impressed with the fact that the entire band rode together and managed to fit everything (guitars, bass, amps and drum kit) in a 1973 Buick Regal. BIG trunk in those early '70s land yachts! After the gig, the IP and (Absolute Grey) band members took the band out for a late meal at Gitsis. Alex was somewhat bemused with our fervent ardor and was smitten by one of the other members of the after-gig party, Ashley Black. I remember him commenting that she looked like Jean Shrimpton.

Imagine sitting in a late-night hangout like Gitsis, the Buick parked outside, and the lead singer of the legendary Big Star, as well as the guy who sang "The Letter" with the Box Tops, discussing a swingin' '60s model and actress."
I'm Ashley Black. The year was 1983 and Alex and I kept in touch up until Hurricane Katrina.
