From the 40 Year-Old Virgin:

  • Andy: It's all right.

  • Cal: Is that the Six Million Dollar Man's boss?

  • Andy: It's Oscar Goldman.

  • Cal: Why do you have that?

  • Andy: That's worth a lot of money. That's much more valuable than Steve Austin.

Edgy 1950s comedian Shelly Berman has died at the age of 92. One of the "new breed" of standup performers to come along in the latter half of the fifties, Berman was probably the first comic to make his own personal psychological insecurities grist for his material. He was not the sort of performer who dished up lappy gags for Grandma, but neither was he a fierce critic of the social scene like Mort Sahl or Lenny Bruce -- instead he was the precursor to the Woody Allen type of comedian who mined his own emotional vulnerability for laughs. There was only really a very narrow window of time where the American zeitgeist could have created this type of comedian, and Berman fell precisely in the middle of it.

Berman, explaining his use of the word 'sterwardi:'

Stewardi is, of course, the plural of 'stewardess...' there are several words that I think should be spelled differently. For example, I think the plural of 'yo-yo' should be 'yo-yi.' Or, how about one Sheriff, but several Sheriffim? One blouse, but two blice, one Kleenex, but several Kleeneces. One goof but a group of geef...two jackii.

My favorite country singer Don Williams has passed away. To me, Williams' songs represented a true Southerm gentleman. Not a loud-mouthed, hell raising redneck, but a man who was intelligent and well read, whose thoughts were measured and earnest.

Williams was 78

Kind of eerie HH that I was in the local Cavendars yesterday and engaged in a conversation with a gentleman in the parking lot about hats. He began to tell me that for awhile he had been trying to duplicate the look of Don Williams hat, the one displayed above in your post. He even grabbed it from his truck to show me and tell me how he had been working on it. I'll be damned.
