My fella isn't particularly retro minded, but he doesn't dislike it either. We met in college, and he enjoys participating periodically in vintage events.

If you are looking for ideas as to where to meet a vintage sweetie, here are some ideas:
  • Re-enacting events/groups- even ones from different time periods. A number of people here are also into Ren Faire, Dicken's Fair, and other similar groups.
  • Vintage Themed Dances, Clubs, Events
  • Historical groups and societies.
  • Local vintage stores if you have them. Both the workers and the clientele may be good prospects.
  • If you're into the 50's look, rockabilly events, and car shows may be an option.

And of course there are always online dating sites. My Dad is quite enamored with eHarmony.

this is good advice, though avoid eHarmony unless you are religious. It really is at the core of their values.

apparently i'm one of the 20% of the population they cannot match with anyone and i'm sure thats purely ndown to my antireligious stance.

Oh so THAT'S what they mean when their ads talk about matching you on "values". They don't mean whether or not you believe in recycling or socialist principles - they just want to know which denomination you are! lol lol

LOL! I think the more cosmopolitan the city is, the better the odds are for most Loungers. Also it helps if you are already in the same environment that will attract like minded people. I think Higher Education is a wonderful way to meet people, and make long term relationships.

I think that's a good point, metropd. I've never felt like Albuquerque really has that. I haven't had any success finding any dates, let alone friends, who are really into vintage things.

And overall, I think most anything gets better with education.

I sort of met my boy on myspace. He is from my hometown though and we had seen each other around since the late 80s when we were both part of the very small C86/indie scene in the town. We had friends in common and I knew his ex-girlfriend but we had somehow never met. He sent a friendly "Gosh, I recognise you from the old days" message on myspace and when we eventually met up in person we fell for each other heavily. He had had an interest in vintage when he was younger but had forgotten about it somewhat and meeting me rekindled his love and enthusiasm and gave him the courage to dress in vintage again.

I met my wife at a Ronnie Dawson, High Noon and Three Blue Teardrops show about 17 years ago....been married for 8! We were both into vintage, so it has been an easy time for both of us.

SWING.

I am definitely not a "Get out there" sort of gal, but making myself learn the dance gave me the avenue to "put myself out there."

And lo and behold, in just about every scene there come a few of us who live for the look (that's how I met my fella), but just about every person there has some thread of a kindred spirit to them. I've never met so many people under 30 who can sing along with (and cite, and argue about the best version of, and innovate upon musicality-wise) just about any pre-1950 song. It has been an eye-opening, fear-busting, life-changing way to meet like-hearted folk.

I got rejected too with no explanation. I bet the religion thing was the reason why. [huh] Ridiculous.

What an odd thing to say. Did you mean that to sound so judgemental or was it meant to be lighthearted?

Simple fact.

Going from "I'm not going to get a tattoo" to "People who have tattoos are (insert adjective)" is a leap.

Smuterella, I think Paisley was being very dryly humorous. ;)
Anyway, it can definitely be hard to find a vintage mate. Paisley's comment about a lot of swing dancers not being into vintage is true. A lot of them I find are not even particularly into personal hygiene. But that's a whole other rant.

Yes--my comment was meant as dry humor and not a dig at anyone.

There are a few swing dancers here who could take hygiene a bit more seriously--but just a few.

Blast! Can't we just start a Fedora Colony or something? We'd most certainly be in the very best of company if we did. ;)

Build an opera house, and I will join up. Heck, I will come and sing jazz if you start the colony.

Will do...perhaps something on par with La Scala?

The Colony simply wouldn't be complete without a competent and soulful jazz singer...you've got the job, chap!

Lucky you. Your scene must be pretty different from Seattle. A bunch of kids who could not care less about anything vintage. If they could find non swing music that was as well suited to the dance, they would be doing it.

Just to be clear, my main occupation would be in that beautiful opera house you are planning. But, until it is built, and whenever I am not on stage, find me a pianist or a backing band, and I will sing in the brick and mortar Fedora Lounge.

I notice a lot of girls nowadays have a ton of tattoos too. I hang out in a lot of rockabilly type bars/clubs and this is so common, kind of a bummer IMO what do you think of the tatted up girl thing? I would love to have me a nice vintage girl haha

At the risk of being judgmental and sexist at the same time, I've always thought tattoos on men were fine, but I don't like them on women.

I have a couple, but I don't have any public ones on display like on the neck for example, which has become something of a trendy fad which I don't get.

Still the whole tattoo scene has become something else from the old days IMHO. Recently a tattoo shop opened up in my local upscale mall....
