Anyone know when dobbs started to use the red logo?

I don't have any firm dates, but it appears they started using it sometime in the 1960s. My best guess, at any rate.

Did they use less-permanent dyes around then. I just got caught out in the rain with a similar Dobbs (red label, overwelt) in brown, and was noticing the light brownish drops coming off the brim in front of my eyes.

Well, that particular logo style has been around for a while. But, judging by the plastic liner cover, the tag, the sweat, etc., I'd think that your lid is more recent. 60's?

That logo, in one form or another, has been around since the early days of Dobbs. There are variations based on the amount of gold used, amount of color used, things like that. It really begins to be used starting in the late-'40s. Your hat is of more recent vintage, 1980s through current production.

Any Idea what the quality was back then(60's) in regards to felt/fur blends ect....

Unless it mentions beaver, nutria, or other specific critters anywhere, it will be mostly a blend of hare and rabbit. Some beaver could be in it, but percentages were/are a closely guarded secret. Coming out of the factory at East Norwalk, it's still a quality hat, no matter when it was made.

I have an early 50's and a mid 80's Dobbs with the same logo. So as far as providing a date is concerned, this logo is of little use. We need to look to other things to guide us, like the colour, width & style of sweat band, any Union tag present, shape of size tag, etc etc.

The Crown is about 4 1/2 inches tall
Brim is 2 inches
There is a union label behind the size tag
There is sales tag on the inside...the style name ect are filled in using a dot matrix printer..that's a tell a tail sign that its from the 80's...i
