Glad to hear you're OK, D-guy. Others over there on different mailing lists I'm on are checking in; some haven't yet.

This is one of the wonderful side benefits of the Internet. Before the Internet something like this would happen and we'd hear about it, but it was usually somewhat abstract--something bad has happened to strangers a long ways away. Now, when something like this happens a long ways away there is often a connection with someone there through forums and e-mail lists. I think that helps to make it more real to people, the ability to put a name, a face, a relationship even if electronic, there in the area. Makes it a more personal concern, perhaps helps prompts people to try to do more to help.

I'm not sure I'm getting across what I mean, but I think that it's a good thing for our world and am glad it will only become more and more prevalant over the years.

That`s true Tango Yankee, in fact the only way we could communicate locally was through the internet - there is a great application avaliable on smart phones called WhatsApp, and its a type of internet chat - that was the only way to cintact each other (and Skype too) for the most part of yesterday - the phone lines were too congested or down...

I thought of you right away and really began to wonder when I started learning late this evening EST how Tokyo is being affected. Glad to see you've posted positive things. Today has been not a good day - after what started as a difficult night with many aftershocks, I was hoping this morning that the day would wear on with time (albeit a day) separating the earthquake. I went out with my wife to the shops, bought some supplies in case things got worse, and ate at a small Italian restaurant near our apartment. The afternoon turned out to bring news beyond the wildest imaginations - a nuclear power plant is reported to have exploded. We ran to the shops, bought up water, foods and toilet paper, and could be holed up in case the cloud moves over here. I have to pinch myself to believe this is happening...but then, my father survived bombings during the war, as well as fighting in SE Asia...and I`m pretty determined that I`m going to pull through this too. But it does not seem true.

Again, your thoughts provide us with courage. We have our bags at the door ready for evacuation; or enough food and water to stay here for some time. The situation can only get worse before it gets better...

I live between two nuclear power plant, it's always in the back of my mind...

The generator of the power plant is intact. The outer walls of the building housing the generator collapesed due to the hydrogen vapor build up as they were working to lower the pressure. Somehow, they are still managing to keep things under control.

The damages from the tsunamis far exceed our imagination, and the projections of disaster control planning. Many areas are still completely isolated, and some communities totally wiped out.

Yes, there does seem to have a lot of differing information, thanks for clarifing. Can I extend all your wishes to all the people in Japan and other forum members too.

I`ve just awoken, and trying to gather information. Contrary to what I expected, I had the deepest sleep I`ve ever has in ages. All is still intact and if you saw Tokyo, you would not think anything has happened, apart seeing less people in the streets yesterday. Elecrticity I believe will be rationed now, and the full effect and emergency plans of corporates etc will become evident in the week ahead. But this is clearly a national emergency of unthought of proportions. I have full faith in the Japanese people to overcome this though - they have done so in the past. Tokyo was devastated during the war, and they built up not only the city but the country into a world class metropolis and one of the largest economies in the world. Japan`s future is in good hands, but nature this time is proving a strong challenge.
