Custom Vanson — any insight?

Apologies if this info is floating around, but an initial search didn’t uncover anything obvious.

I’m between sizes on the Vanson Commando (LeftField and ButterScotch Tri-lab) and am toying with the idea of having modifications made to the fit (on a new jacket order, by Vanson during the production process).

I’ve seen mentions of custom modifications. I’m curious to hear how that process went: how much extra cost did it incur, was it a blanket cost or did they charge per mod (I.E. X price to update sleeve length, another X to tweak the chest width).

I’ve emailed Vanson, but no response yet. In the meantime, I figured there was a wealth of insight here to be mined

It's risky. Depends on what you're trying to do of course, but anything major is going to be $250+

I have a Schott 141 that I drastically changed from a boxy action back to a form fitting single panel back. The cuts turned out great and from far the jacket looks awesome. But up close you can see where tailor missed holes, etc.

Unless it's like a very unique jacket or design, it's a bit of a crap shoot and you may be better off just buying something that fits. But there's lots of success stories too. Depends on what you're trying to do, who does the work, etc.

Are you the one selling on Ebay

Your best bet is to take up to the Cal Leathers shop in Ventura. They do quality work at fair price. And it's in person, so they can measure, etc. But it's not guaranteed. There's also Dena who a lot of members have used with great success, but you have to mail it to her, explain via email, etc.

Or just sell me the jacket and start over (edit, if you're the one selling that nice Commando on Ebay)

Edit: Also, forgot to mention, usually once they open up the liner, then they can tackle all the jobs. So best to do everything in one shot. Less holes, less work, probably cheaper, etc.

ah yeah, that's good. I think Vanson charges $100 or $150 for a pattern change if I'm not mistaken. A few people on here have had good experience with that. Hopefully they chime in. Not sure what the wait times are at Vanson these days though.

I would bet that wait times are really long today. I feel like it is worth it though.

That price seems totally reasonable for a pattern change, which is likely what I’ll go for. Such a sweet jacket. I’m tall and skinny, so the reality is that off the rack is just not gonna do the job effectively for me.
