On the way back from Curling playdowns in Utica, at an antique store in PA, I found this curling stone. No markings, and no info, so I don't know what club it belonged to, or the exact date, other than that it's sometime from between the '30s and '60s.

Well, that certainly makes for an interesting conversation piece. Interesting find! :)

How much do those things weigh?

It weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 42 pounds. I haven't weighted it, though.

Since I took the photo, I've cleaned it up with some soapy water on the stone, and some brasso on the handle. The handle is shiny, and the stone looks much better. Now that it's clean, you can see some markings on the handle. I'll get an after photo up sometime tomorrow.

Based on my very limited knowledge of curling, I'd say your stone is closer to 1930's than 1960's...

It's a lovely find though. I know someone in my family who'd love to have that "door stop". ;) lol My first little cheflet is an avid curling fan. :D

I showed it to a neighbor, who used to be president of the local club. He said it's probably early '30s, and canadian. He wasn't sure, but thought it was an experimental design, made out of a different source of granite, and cut with almost no bevel to the bottom.

A cool old curling trophy. What do you suppose the loop at the top is?

It's a handle... because the vase is shaped like a flower basket. People used tyo actually use their urns, vases, trays etc that they got as trophies for the use the shape was intended for. A little silver polish and you have a lovely vase!

I've just gotta say that I really appreciate these items! The stone you started this thread with is very unique, especially with the "art deco" styling in the handle. I also like the ashtray with the Scottish curler and the tray itself etched as "the house". Please keep the pictures coming as you add to your collection!

Got this at the thrift shop as well. They're not banned, but they're strongly looked down upon, and they're a royal pain to use compared to the modern brushes. They leave junk all over the ice, and you have to soak them in water to keep them flexible. But as far as a neat piece of curling memorabilia for my dorm- it's great. And there's talk of a vintage-rules bonspiel happening sometime at the end of the season back home eventually, so maybe I could give it a run then.
