Traditional Country and Western

The issue is that most contemporary "country" singers have abandoned the traditional sound, trying to turn traditional American folk music into mainstream pop. The lack of the traditional cowboy hat is simply symbolic of that transition. Perhaps some think this is a good thing, but not all traditions need to be "reinvented" to appeal to the lowest common commercial denominator.
Yup, I agree...Some traditions can't be improved upon through modernization, like traditional country & western music...to me, the encroachment of contemporary into C & W music has stripped it of its identity and originality to where one new contemporary song sounds just like another...the same has happened to Gospel as well...like new cars today, one looks just like the other...no style...I love the old traditions...and the Cowboy Hats too...Here's an old C & W song I haven't heard for years...

My 16 year old daughter insists that "cool" and "country" are mutually exclusive terms. "Popular," yes. But "cool"? No way. Well, except for Willie.

Hi

Willie was sort of at the Concert for Moore on Saturday. I guess Toby had to help him with the words to his (Willie's) songs. From what I heard, the weed ate his brain. Toby put on a good show from what I heard, but Sammy Hagar was obviously too old for Spandex too.

Note, I didn't go, but that's what the three people that went told me.

One thing I don't miss about Porter Wagoner is the sound of the Steel Guitar. I always hated that sound. No known problems with a steel guitar, no ex-girlfriends that loved those songs, but it just grates on me.

Well, if Blake Shelton doesn't wear one, I guess I'm going to stop wearing any of the ten or more cowboy hats hanging around my house for the last 47 years. Seriously, I'd be happy if nobody in "country music" wore a cowboy hat anymore, most of them look like they're wearing ladies "fashion" cowboy hats (with the possible exception of Junior Brown, who manages to make the horrible "taco hat" style look cool). and I'm sure the hatmaking industry and cowboy hat wearers would weather the horrible consequences just fine. Give me Don Edwards or Red Stegall any day, they can both ride and rope, although I believe that's considered "Western" music, not country. Tempest in a teapot. Frank

Have you heard how Osama bin Laden liked to dress and travel while hiding in Afghanistan?

WEARING COWBOY HATS!

I about fell out of the chair when I heard that from a just-released report on how he hid in plain site. He was about 6'6" or so, with a big crown on top of that? LOL talk about living large!

PS, Frankly, I'll not be unhappy if the country rock stars lose the hats; I'm not fond of them or the styles they favor.

I just stole this one that I do favor on ePrey: Cavanagh New York Cowboy Western Hat, Made in Texas USA, 7 3/8, Brown Felt

I really liked Blake Shelton, I really did. Then he had to call traditional country fans 'old farts and jackasses.' I'll never buy one of his records again.

Saw Don Williams back in the day. Danny Flowers and Dave Pomeroy were in the band at the time. It was one of the best concerts I ever attended, man those cats can play!

I will also admit that I am a fan of Brad Paisley, though I am not familiar with all of his work, he put out an album a few years ago entitled "Play" and it is fantastic.
